Indian students need a long-stay D study visa for any course longer than 90 days. The fee is €60 for single entry (charged as ₹5,300 in India) or €100 for multiple entry (₹9,000), you must show immediate access to €10,000 (about ₹10.9 lakh) for living costs on top of paid tuition, and the Embassy of Ireland in New Delhi currently decides study applications in 4–8 weeks. After arrival you register for an Irish Residence Permit (Stamp 2) for €300 and may work 20 hours a week in term.
Which Ireland study visa do Indian students need?
Indian passport holders are visa-required for Ireland, so every student needs a visa before flying. The visa type depends on course length. A course of 90 days or less takes a short-stay C visa; anything longer, which covers every bachelor's, master's, PhD and most diplomas, takes the long-stay D study visa. The D visa is what people mean by "Ireland student visa", "Ireland study visa" or "Stamp 2 visa", although strictly the visa gets you to the border and Stamp 2 is the permission stamped into your passport and recorded on your Irish Residence Permit (IRP) card after you register in Ireland.
The application itself is made online on AVATS, the Irish Naturalisation and Immigration Service's Automated Visa Application and Tracking System. The system creates a summary form that you print, sign and lodge, together with the fee and your documents, at a VFS Global visa application centre in India. Residents of India aged 5 or over give fingerprints and a photo at the centre. Your passport stays with the Embassy of Ireland in New Delhi until a decision is made, so do not book flights before the visa arrives.
Ireland does not run an eVisa or a points system. A visa officer reads your file and decides whether the course is genuine, whether you can afford it, and whether you intend to study rather than work. That makes the quality of your documents, especially the money trail, the single biggest factor for Indian applicants, and it is why refusals cluster around unexplained lump-sum deposits and unverifiable sponsors.
How much does an Ireland student visa cost from India in 2026?
The visa fee is small by UK or Australian standards, but the money you must show and pay up front is not. Here is every rupee-relevant number for a typical one-year master's applicant from India.
| Item | Amount (EUR) | Approx. INR | When it is paid or shown |
|---|---|---|---|
| Visa fee, single entry | €60 | ₹5,300 (fixed rupee fee at VFS) | At the VFS appointment |
| Visa fee, multiple entry | €100 | ₹9,000 (fixed rupee fee at VFS) | At the VFS appointment |
| VFS service charge and courier | Set by VFS | Varies | At booking; check the VFS Ireland–India site |
| Tuition paid before applying | Full fee if under €6,000; at least €6,000 if higher | ≥ ₹6.5 lakh | Bank transfer receipt from the college |
| Proof of living funds | €10,000 for a one-year course | ≈ ₹10.9 lakh | Shown in statements with the application |
| Private medical insurance | €550 – €690 a year on Trinity and UCD budget estimates | ≈ ₹60,000–₹75,000 | Before visa; shown again at registration |
| IRP registration (Stamp 2) | €300 per year of permission | ≈ ₹32,700 | At your registration appointment in Ireland |
€1 = ₹109, Wise mid-market rate on 26 Sep 2026. Visa fees and rupee equivalents from irishimmigration.ie and the Embassy of Ireland, New Delhi; funds figure from the ISD notice on student finance requirements (effective 30 June 2025); registration fee from the ISD required-documents page (updated 4 Sep 2026). Insurance prices are university budget estimates, not set by the government.
How much money do you need to show for an Ireland student visa?
Since 30 June 2025, Immigration Service Delivery requires evidence of immediate access to at least €10,000 (about ₹10.9 lakh) for a course of one year, and "ready access" to the same amount for each further year of a multi-year course. Shorter courses of 6 to 8 months are assessed at €833 a month, which works out to €4,998 for six months or €6,665 for eight. This figure is the government's estimate of a student's living costs for one academic year and sits on top of tuition, which must already be paid to the college as described above.
For Indian applicants the practical evidence is: your own or your sponsor's savings-account statements, an Irish education bond or an approved student fee-payment service such as those that hold your living funds in escrow, fixed-deposit certificates that mature before or during the course, and a sanctioned education-loan letter. Loan sanction letters from public-sector banks are accepted as part of the picture; the visa officer will want to see the sanction amount, the disbursement conditions and whether the loan is collateral-backed. Non-collateral loans from NBFCs and international lenders are also common; whichever you use, include the sanction letter, the repayment schedule and the sponsor's income proof.
Bank statements must be up to date and show what has been paid into and out of the account over the last six months, and they must show a consistent history, not a single large deposit weeks before applying. If a parent or relative is sponsoring you, add proof of your relationship, a six-month bank statement for each sponsor and evidence of their income, such as a letter from their employer plus 3 recent payslips or, for a business owner, a registration certificate. The Embassy in New Delhi specifically recommends easily verifiable documents such as DigiLocker copies because in-depth verification of banks, employers and sponsors is the most common reason a study application runs past 8 weeks.
Remittance from India is under the Liberalised Remittance Scheme and forex transfers for education attract tax collected at source above a threshold; the rate and threshold have changed more than once, so check the current Income Tax rules or ask your bank before you transfer tuition.
Ireland student visa requirements for Indian students: the document checklist
The ISD long-stay study visa page lists what every file must contain. Documents must be originals or certified copies in hard copy; photocopies and electronic signatures are not accepted, and anything not in English or Irish needs a certified translation.
- Signed AVATS application summary form, lodged within 30 days of creating the online application, plus your current passport valid for at least 12 months after your planned arrival and copies of any previous passports.
- Two recent passport-size colour photographs meeting the ISD photo specification.
- A letter of acceptance from an Irish college confirming you are enrolled on a full-time course with at least 15 hours of organised daytime tuition a week, stating the fees payable, the fees already paid and whether the college has arranged medical insurance for you.
- Proof of fee payment: an electronic funds transfer receipt to the college's Irish bank account showing both parties' details, or a receipt from an approved student fee-payment service.
- Evidence of €10,000 in accessible funds for a one-year course (see the funds section), with a signed letter of application explaining the source of your money and who is paying.
- English-language evidence at the visa minimum: IELTS Academic 5.0, TOEFL iBT 61, PTE Academic 30, Duolingo English Test 75 or an equivalent listed test, with the certificate issued within 2 years of your course start date.
- Academic history: 10th and 12th mark sheets, degree transcripts and certificates, and an explanation of any gap between education and employment (offer letters, experience letters or salary slips).
- Private medical insurance covering accidents and hospital stays in Ireland for the length of your stay. First-time registration in Ireland also accepts travel insurance that carries the required medical cover, but renewals need private medical insurance.
- A signed letter of application setting out why you chose the course and Ireland, how it fits your prior study, and an undertaking that you will observe visa conditions and leave when your permission ends.
- For unaccompanied students under 18: birth certificate, parental consent, and details of the guardian and accommodation in Ireland.
How to apply for an Ireland student visa from India, step by step
Work backwards from your course start date. The ISD says you can apply up to 3 months before travel, and the New Delhi visa office warns that applications lodged less than 3 weeks before the course begins may not be decided in time.
Accept your offer and pay the college (June–July for September intake)
Pay the full fee if it is under €6,000, or at least €6,000 if it is higher, by bank transfer to the college's Irish account or through an approved fee-payment service. Keep the transfer receipt; it is a visa document. Ask the college for the acceptance letter worded to the ISD template.
Arrange funds, insurance and English evidence
Line up €10,000 in accessible funds with 6 months of statement history, get the education-loan sanction letter if you are borrowing, buy private medical insurance valid from your arrival date, and confirm your English certificate is within 2 years of the course start.
Complete the AVATS online form
Choose "Study" as the reason, "Long stay (D)" as the type and single or multiple entry. Answer every question fully and consistently with your documents, then print and sign the summary form. You have 30 days from creating the form to lodge it.
Book a VFS Global appointment and pay the fee
Book at your nearest Ireland visa application centre in India and pay the visa fee (₹5,300 single or ₹9,000 multiple entry) plus VFS charges. Attend in person with your passport and the full document set; residents of India aged 5 or over give biometrics at the centre.
Wait for the New Delhi decision
Files from the Delhi centre reach the Embassy the next working day; other centres take two. The Embassy then targets 4–8 weeks for study visas, counted in working days from receipt, and publishes decided application numbers each morning at about 11:00 IST on its visa decisions page.
Collect your passport and travel
Once a decision is made, the return package goes to the Delhi centre the next working day and is then couriered to your address by Blue Dart, generally within two working days of collection. Check the visa dates and entries before booking flights. Carry your acceptance letter, fee receipt, funds evidence and insurance for the immigration officer at Dublin airport, who grants the initial Stamp 2 landing permission.
Register for your Irish Residence Permit within 90 days
Book a first-time registration appointment through your ISD online account (since 13 January 2025, first-time registration for everyone in the Republic of Ireland is handled by Immigration Service Delivery at its Registration Office, 13-14 Burgh Quay, Dublin 2, not by local Garda offices), pay €300 and present your passport, a college letter dated on or after your course start confirming full-time enrolment on a course on the Interim List of Eligible Programmes (ILEP), proof of fees paid, scholarship proof if it applies, private medical insurance (or travel insurance with the required medical cover) and proof of address. Visa-required students such as Indians do not need to show proof of funds again at registration. Your IRP card records Stamp 2 and its expiry date.
Avoid the agent-visa trap
Ireland student visa processing time in 2026
Processing times are counted in working days from the day the Embassy receives your file, not from your VFS appointment, and exclude the courier legs either side. These are the usual timeframes published by the New Delhi visa office; a file that needs verification or an interview can take longer.
| Stage | Typical time | Source |
|---|---|---|
| Earliest you can apply | 3 months before travel | ISD long-stay study visa page |
| Lodging the AVATS summary after creating it | Within 30 days | ISD long-stay study visa page |
| VFS centre to Embassy transit | 1 working day from Delhi; 2 from other centres | Embassy of Ireland, New Delhi |
| Study visa first decision, New Delhi | 4–8 weeks | Embassy of Ireland, New Delhi (17 Sep 2026) |
| ISD global guidance for study visas | Approximately 8 weeks | ISD long-stay study visa page |
| Return courier after decision | Next working day to Delhi VAC, then generally 2 working days by Blue Dart (about 3 in total) | Embassy of Ireland, New Delhi |
| Appeal after a refusal | Lodge within 2 months; decision up to 6 calendar months | ISD and Embassy of Ireland pages |

What can you do on Stamp 2 once you arrive?
Stamp 2 is the student permission recorded on your IRP card. It lets you work without an employment permit for up to 20 hours a week during term and up to 40 hours a week in the standardised holiday periods of June, July, August and September and from 15 December to 15 January. You will need a Personal Public Service (PPS) number to be paid legally, and pay is at least the national minimum wage of €14.15 an hour for anyone aged 20 or over (about ₹1,540). Self-employment and running a business are not allowed on Stamp 2.
You must keep attending your course, pass your exams and progress; the college reports non-attendance to ISD. Time on student permission is capped at 7 years in total, extended to 8 years where you complete a Level 9 or higher award, and that cap includes time later spent on the Stamp 1G graduate permission. Your IRP normally runs for one year at a time, so you renew each year, paying €300 again. Visa-required students such as Indians do not show proof of finances at registration or renewal, because that is checked during the visa application. For degree and master's students the renewal pack is your passport biometric page, the front and back of your current IRP card, proof of enrolment on a full-time higher education course on the ILEP, exam results, proof of fees paid, scholarship proof if it applies and private medical insurance (travel insurance is not sufficient for renewal).
Family members cannot join you as dependants on a student permission. Spouses and children need their own visa and permission in another category, which in practice means the family stays in India unless one partner holds an employment permit. Plan for that when you compare Ireland with Canada or Australia.
Why are Ireland student visas refused, and how do you appeal?
The refusal reasons visa officers cite most often for Indian files are: finances that cannot be verified or that appeared suddenly; a course that does not follow logically from previous study or work, with no convincing explanation in the letter of application; gaps in education or employment left unexplained; inconsistencies between the AVATS form and the documents; and doubts that the applicant will leave Ireland when the permission ends. English below the visa minimum, insurance missing, or fee payment below the €6,000 threshold are straightforward document failures.
If refused, the letter lists the reasons under standard codes and tells you whether you have a right of appeal. Study visa appeals must be lodged within 2 months of the letter date, in writing, addressing each refusal ground with new or clarified evidence; the New Delhi office quotes 6 calendar months for appeal decisions, so for a September start a fresh, corrected application is often faster than an appeal. Note that from 1 June 2026 short-stay visa refusals can no longer be appealed at all, although that rule does not touch long-stay study visas. A serious misrepresentation can bar you from Irish visas for 5 years, so never let anyone alter a bank statement or letter on your behalf.
Ireland vs UK, Canada and Australia: the student-visa numbers Indian families compare
- Ireland's visa fee of €60 (₹5,300) is among the lowest for an English-speaking destination, and there is no separate health surcharge because you buy private medical insurance yourself.
- Proof of funds is a flat €10,000 a year regardless of city, unlike the UK's London and outside-London tiers; Dublin's real rents mean many students budget above the visa figure.
- The Embassy's 4–8 week timeline is slower than the UK's 3-week standard, so Ireland applicants should be lodging in May or June for a September start.
- Work rights are the same 20 hours a week in term, and Ireland's Third Level Graduate Programme (Stamp 1G) gives Level 9 graduates up to 24 months to find permit-sponsored work.
- The 7-year (8-year for master's and above) cap on total student-pathway time is unusual; students planning bachelor's plus master's plus PhD in Ireland need to count the years.
Frequently asked questions
How much is the Ireland student visa fee for Indian students?
The fee is €60 for a single-entry visa and €100 for multiple entry. In India the Embassy charges fixed rupee amounts, ₹5,300 and ₹9,000 respectively, paid to VFS Global when you book your appointment; VFS adds its own service and courier charges on top.
How much bank balance is required for an Ireland student visa?
You must show immediate access to at least €10,000 (about ₹10.9 lakh) for a one-year course, and ready access to the same amount for each further year, in addition to tuition already paid to the college. Courses of 6 to 8 months are assessed at €833 a month.
How long does an Ireland student visa take from India?
The Embassy of Ireland in New Delhi published a 4–8 week timeframe for study visas on 17 September 2026, counted in working days from the day your file reaches the Embassy. Add 1 working day for VFS transit to the Embassy from Delhi (2 from other centres) and about 3 working days on the way back, since the passport goes to the Delhi centre the next working day and Blue Dart generally delivers within two working days of collection. Apply up to 3 months before travel.
Is IELTS mandatory for an Ireland student visa?
No single test is mandatory, but you must meet the visa English minimum with a listed test: IELTS Academic 5.0, TOEFL iBT 61, PTE Academic 30 or Duolingo English Test 75, among others. Your college's own entry requirement is usually higher, typically IELTS 6.0–6.5 for a master's.
Can I work while studying in Ireland on a student visa?
Yes. Stamp 2 permission allows up to 20 hours a week during term and up to 40 hours a week in the holiday periods of June to September and 15 December to 15 January, without an employment permit. The national minimum wage is €14.15 an hour from 1 January 2026.
What is Stamp 2 in Ireland and how is it different from the visa?
The D visa lets you travel to Ireland; Stamp 2 is the student immigration permission you receive at the border and register on your Irish Residence Permit card within 90 days, paying €300. Stamp 2 carries the study, work-hour and 7-year time-limit conditions; the visa sticker itself does not.
Do I need to pay full tuition fees before applying for the Ireland visa?
If the course fee is under €6,000 you must pay it in full before applying. If it is more, you must have paid at least €6,000 to the college and show the electronic transfer receipt. Most Indian master's applicants pay the €6,000 deposit and settle the balance after the visa.
Can I take my spouse or children with me on an Ireland student visa?
Not as dependants. Irish student permission does not carry family-reunification rights, so a spouse or child must qualify for a visa and permission in their own right, for example through an employment permit. Families typically join only once the graduate moves to an employment permit after the Stamp 1G year.
What happens if my Ireland student visa is refused?
The refusal letter lists the grounds and says whether you may appeal. Long-stay study refusals can be appealed in writing within 2 months, with new evidence for each ground; New Delhi quotes up to 6 calendar months for appeal decisions, so a corrected fresh application is often quicker for a fixed intake.
