An MS in engineering in Ireland is usually a one-year, 90-ECTS NFQ Level 9 master's with 2026/27 non-EU fees of €14,500 at TU Dublin (about ₹15.8 lakh), €20,800 at UL, €25,000 at DCU, €27,780 at Trinity, €28,640 at University of Galway and €29,500 at UCD (₹32.2 lakh); UCD's professional ME runs two years. Entry needs a Level 8 honours engineering degree at H2.2 or 2.1 level plus IELTS 6.5, and most engineering disciplines — civil, mechanical and electrical — sit on the Critical Skills Occupations List, so graduates get 24 months on Stamp 1G and a €36,848 permit floor.
Why do Indian engineers pick Ireland for an MS in engineering?
Ireland offers a one-year, English-language Level 9 engineering master's in the disciplines Indian BTech and BE graduates already hold: mechanical, civil, electrical, electronic, energy, biomedical and robotics. Most programmes are 90 ECTS (60 taught, 30 dissertation), so you finish in 12 months, not the two years a US or German route usually takes.
The trade-offs are cost, grades and a cooler labour market than 2022. Fees run from €14,500 to €29,500, places are small (Trinity's mechanical programme has 25) and the CSO shows employment in architectural and engineering activities falling over the past year.
MS in engineering in Ireland fees for Indian students (2026/27)

ME, MEngSc or MSc: which engineering master's should an Indian BTech graduate choose?
Irish universities use four labels for Level 9 engineering awards; the label mainly changes the length and the Chartered Engineer route.
| Award | Typical length | Example | What to know |
|---|---|---|---|
| ME, professional | 2 years · 120 credits | UCD ME Mechanical Engineering (T165) | Professional degree for Chartered Engineer status, optional placement; two years of fees and rent |

Will an Irish engineering master's make you a Chartered Engineer?
Engineers Ireland states that from 1 January 2013 the education requirement for Chartered Engineer is a master's degree in engineering accredited by Engineers Ireland, and that qualifications from outside Ireland recognised under the Washington Accord are accepted as meeting the education level. The title is a career milestone with a separate application, not something you receive with the degree. The NBA became a permanent signatory of the Washington Accord on 13 June 2014 and says Tier-1 accredited programmes are eligible for recognition by other signatories for graduates who completed them after that date. A BTech from an NBA-accredited programme plus an Irish MSc can therefore be assessed for Chartered status, case by case, so ask Engineers Ireland about your own degree.

How to apply for an MS in engineering in Ireland from India: timeline for September 2027
Irish universities take postgraduate applications directly; there is no central postgraduate portal. Engineering cohorts are small, so treat the dates below as the latest sensible points, not deadlines.
September–October 2026: shortlist by fee, accreditation and city
Pick 4–6 programmes across at least two cities and check each for Engineers Ireland accreditation, thesis or placement format and entry grade.
October–November 2026: book IELTS or request an MOI letter
Target IELTS 6.5 with no band under 6.0 (6.5 in Writing for Galway). Trinity, UCD and DCU decide medium-of-instruction exemptions per programme, so ask your registrar for a letter stating the BTech was taught wholly in English.
November 2026 – February 2027: submit applications
Upload every semester's transcript, the degree or provisional certificate, a CV, references and a statement naming the modules, labs and final-year project behind your choice.
January–April 2027: offers, interviews and scholarship forms
DCU may interview; UL reviews scholarships with the offer; apply for UCD scholarships on SISWeb after an offer. The GOI-IES call closed on 12 March 2026, so watch for the next one.
March–May 2027: accept, pay the deposit and arrange the money
Galway's deposit is usually €500, sometimes €1,000, deducted from fees. The visa file needs a loan sanction letter and proof of €10,000 in accessible funds. Check the current RBI LRS and TCS rules on remitting tuition and deposits before you transfer funds.
May–July 2027: lodge the D study visa
Apply through AVATS, book VFS biometrics, pay ₹5,300 and submit the offer letter, fee receipt, bank statements, loan sanction and English evidence. The New Delhi embassy quotes 4–8 weeks and warns that applications made under 3 weeks before the course start may not be decided in time.
August–September 2027: arrive, register, start
Register for your IRP (€300), get a PPS number and open a bank account. Work is capped at 20 hours a week in term and 40 hours from June to September and 15 December to 15 January.

Jobs after an MS in engineering in Ireland: Stamp 1G, the Critical Skills list and salary thresholds
A Level 9 master's qualifies you for the Third Level Graduate Programme: 12 months on Stamp 1G, renewed for a further 12 where you show you have taken appropriate steps to find graduate-level work, so up to 24 months in all. The registration fee is €300, and you must apply within six months of being notified of your result while holding Stamp 2.
Engineering is one of the better-placed fields for the move to an employment permit. The Critical Skills Occupations List names civil, structural and site engineers (2121), mechanical engineers (2122) and electrical engineers (2123) outright, and lists electronics (2124), design and development (2126) and production and process engineers (2127) when the role is a listed specialism such as chip design, test engineering or process automation. A Critical Skills Employment Permit needs a minimum salary of €40,904 (about ₹44.6 lakh), reduced to €36,848 (₹40.2 lakh) where you obtained your qualification within the previous 12 months. The offer must be for at least two years, no labour-market test applies, the fee is €1,000 (₹1.1 lakh) and immediate family can join you. Engineering roles outside the list use the General Employment Permit at €36,605 (₹39.9 lakh), or €34,009 (₹37.1 lakh) for recent Irish graduates, usually with a labour-market needs test; any role paying over €68,911 (₹75.1 lakh) qualifies regardless of occupation.
Frequently asked questions
Can I become a Chartered Engineer in Ireland with a BTech from India?
Possibly. Engineers Ireland requires an accredited master's and accepts Washington Accord qualifications. India's NBA has been a signatory since 13 June 2014, but only for NBA-accredited programmes completed after that date, so ask Engineers Ireland to assess your own degree.
What is the cheapest masters in engineering in Ireland for Indian students?
TU Dublin's one-year engineering master's costs €14,500 (about ₹15.8 lakh) for non-EU students in 2026/27, against €20,800 at UL and €25,000 at DCU. With Dublin living costs of €21,050 – €27,050, a TU Dublin year totals roughly ₹38.7 – 45.3 lakh.
Are engineers on the Critical Skills list in Ireland?
Yes. The list names civil, structural and site engineers (2121), mechanical engineers (2122) and electrical engineers (2123), and several other engineering codes when the role is a listed specialism. The permit needs a salary of €40,904, or €36,848 within 12 months of qualifying, and a job offer of at least two years.
What percentage do I need for a masters in engineering in Ireland?
DCU and the Galway ME ask for an H2.2; Trinity, UCC and the Galway MSc ask for a 2.1. UCC publishes the only Indian mapping we found: 55% = 2H2, 65% = 2H1, 75% = first class. It also says Indian applicants normally need a first class or first division mark at a good institution, so ask each admissions office.
Is there a January intake for engineering masters in Ireland?
Yes, at DCU: its MEng in Mechanical and Manufacturing Engineering lists a spring 2027 start with a non-EU closing date of 4 December 2026. Most other engineering master's begin in September, and places are small, so apply 6–9 months ahead.
Is the engineering job market in Ireland slowing down in 2026?
Mixed. The CSO shows employment in Professional, Scientific and Technical activities down 17,100 (-8.2%) in Q2 2026, driven by architectural and engineering activities, while hours worked in Industry and Construction rose.
Can I do an MS in engineering in Ireland after a diploma or a 3-year degree?
Usually not directly. The programmes above ask for a Level 8 honours degree in engineering or a related discipline, which corresponds to a 4-year BE or BTech. UCC says it considers three-year degrees case by case through its International Office, so email admissions with your transcripts before paying any fee.
