US universities typically ask for IELTS Academic 6.5 overall: Arizona State and UT Dallas set 6.5 for graduate admission, Purdue sets 6.5 with section minimums of Reading 6.5, Listening 6.0, Speaking 6.0 and Writing 5.5 for graduate and typically 6.5 with 6.0 in each section for undergraduate applicants. What IELTS score is required for the USA?
There is no national IELTS requirement for the United States. Each university, and often each department, sets its own minimum, and the F-1 visa is issued without any English test. In practice the requirements cluster tightly: the graduate schools whose pages we read on 26 September 2026 (Arizona State, UT Dallas, Purdue) all set IELTS Academic 6.5 overall as the university-wide minimum for international graduate applicants, and Purdue describes 6.5 as the typical undergraduate score too. Competitive programmes and universities layer higher expectations on top, and teaching assistantships often require a separate spoken-English standard.
Section minimums are where Indian applicants trip up. Purdue's graduate rule is 6.5 overall with Reading 6.5, Listening 6.0, Speaking 6.0 and Writing 5.5, and its undergraduate page describes the typical applicant as 6.5 with at least 6.0 in every section, a profile within a holistic review rather than a hard pass mark. An overall 7.0 with a 5.5 in Writing meets the graduate rule at Purdue but sits below the typical undergraduate profile; an overall 6.5 built on an 8.0 Reading and a 5.0 Speaking falls short of both. Check the section floors of every programme on your list, not just the headline band.
Every US university that accepts IELTS wants the Academic module. IELTS General Training is not accepted for admission by Arizona State, Purdue (undergraduate) or Illinois, so check any other university's page before assuming otherwise. Arizona State also accepts IELTS Online, IELTS UKVI and the IELTS Indicator; Purdue accepts IELTS Online Academic and IELTS Indicator for undergraduates; Illinois lists IELTS Academic and IELTS Indicator. IELTS for the USA: rules Indian applicants should know before booking
- Book IELTS Academic, never General Training. Computer-delivered and paper tests are treated identically; IELTS Online and IELTS Indicator are accepted by some universities (ASU, Purdue undergraduate, Illinois) but not all, so check before choosing the online version.
- Time the test so the score is still under two years old on your programme start date (ASU) or at the time of admission (UT Dallas, Purdue). A test taken in your second year of college may expire before a Fall intake two years later.
- Send scores through the IELTS results service to each university; UT Dallas and Purdue undergraduate require official delivery from the test provider before enrolment even if you uploaded a copy for admission, while Purdue's graduate office also accepts an IELTS score report uploaded to the applicant status portal as official.
- Section floors matter more than the overall band at Purdue (graduate R 6.5, L 6.0, S 6.0, W 5.5; undergraduate typically 6.0 each). Plan retakes around the weakest section rather than the total.
- Teaching assistantships usually have a separate spoken-English requirement; a high Speaking band or a departmental screening may be needed before you can be paid to teach.
- If your degree was taught and examined in English, ask for a medium-of-instruction letter as well: it may replace IELTS entirely at ASU or UT Dallas and is cheap insurance if a score is borderline.
- The F-1 visa needs no IELTS. The consular officer may ask for documents such as the standardized test scores your school required, so keep your score report to hand at the interview.
How to meet the IELTS requirement for the USA: step by step
List every programme's IELTS rule
For each shortlisted programme record the overall minimum, section minimums, whether IELTS Online or Indicator is accepted, and the validity rule. Note where a waiver applies to you.
Set your target band
Aim at least half a band above the highest minimum on your list, with each section above its floor. For most Indian applicants that means an overall 7.0 with no section under 6.0.
Book 4–5 months before the application deadline
This leaves time for one retake. Results for computer-delivered tests arrive within days; paper results take longer.
Send official scores
Use the IELTS results service to deliver scores electronically to each university, and upload a copy of the Test Report Form in the application portal.
Keep the Test Report Form for the I-20 and visa stages
Universities may re-check the official score before enrolment, and carrying the TRF to the visa interview helps if the officer asks how you met the English requirement.

Is IELTS required for a US student visa?
No. The State Department's requirements for the F-1 are the Form I-20, SEVIS fee, DS-160, visa fee and an in-person interview; no English test is listed. The consular officer may ask for additional documents, such as the standardized test scores your school required, so keep your score report to hand, but there is no IELTS band for the visa.
How long is an IELTS score valid for US universities?
Two years. Arizona State counts validity to your start date at the university, UT Dallas and Purdue to the time of admission or the admission recommendation, and Illinois requires the test to be within two years of the intended entry term and says this cannot be waived. Time your test so it is still valid on the I-20 start date.
Do US universities accept IELTS Online or IELTS Indicator?
Some do.
