UK universities typically ask for IELTS 6.0–6.5 overall for undergraduate and master's courses and 6.5–7.0 for MBAs, law and education, with no band below 5.5 on most courses; medicine and health courses often ask 7.0–7.5. The visa rule is separate: UKVI requires English at CEFR B2 for degree-level courses and B1 below degree level, and a university can assess degree-level English itself, so IELTS is not always mandatory. Where a test is needed for the visa, only IELTS for UKVI or another approved SELT counts.
Who sets the IELTS requirement for the UK: the university or UKVI?
Both, for different purposes. The university sets the score it needs to admit you to a specific course; that is the number on the course page, and it is usually higher than the visa minimum because it reflects what the course actually demands. UK Visas and Immigration sets a floor for the Student visa expressed as a CEFR level: B2 for courses at degree level and above, B1 for courses below degree level. You must satisfy both, but for degree-level courses GOV.UK allows the university to assess your English itself, so in practice meeting the university's requirement is what gets you the visa.
The consequence for Indian applicants is that "the IELTS requirement for the UK" is really two lists. For a master's or bachelor's at a university, look up the course page: Teesside asks 6.0 overall for its MSc Computer Science, Coventry 6.5 with no component below 5.5, and Strathclyde 6.5 for its MBA. For a foundation year, diploma or standalone English course, the visa itself demands a Secure English Language Test at B1, and the university cannot waive it.
The university's number can also be met without IELTS at all, through a medium-of-instruction letter, 12th-board English marks or another test the university accepts (Duolingo, TOEFL, PTE Academic). That route is covered in our guide to studying in the UK without IELTS; this page is for students who will take the test and want to know which version and which score.

IELTS for UKVI vs IELTS Academic: which one do you need?
This is the most expensive mistake Indian students make with IELTS. The two tests have identical content, format, timing and scoring; the difference is administrative, and it determines whether the result counts as a Secure English Language Test for UKVI.
| Feature | IELTS Academic | IELTS for UKVI (Academic) |
|---|---|---|
| Test content and scoring | Listening, Reading, Writing, Speaking; bands 1–9 | Identical |
| Where you sit it | Any IELTS centre | Home Office-approved SELT centres only, with enhanced ID checks |
| Counts as a SELT for the visa? | No | Yes |
| Accepted by universities for admission? | Yes | Yes |
| Needed for a degree-level course at a university? | Usually sufficient: the university assesses English itself and records it on the CAS | Not required unless the university asks for a SELT |
| Needed for a foundation, diploma or English course? | No, not accepted for the visa | Yes, at CEFR B1 or the level the course requires |
| Validity for the visa | Not applicable | 2 years from the award date |
| Fee | Set by the test provider | Higher than IELTS Academic; check the provider |
| Test Report Form | Standard | Carries a UKVI number that UKVI checks against the provider's database |

Which English tests does UKVI accept for the UK student visa?
GOV.UK lists the approved SELT providers. Results count only if the test was sat at an approved location and awarded within the two years before your visa application.
- IELTS SELT Consortium: IELTS for UKVI (Academic and General Training) and IELTS Life Skills. Life Skills is speaking and listening only and is not accepted for study. For the Student route the test must assess reading, writing, speaking and listening.
- Pearson: PTE Academic UKVI, which tests all four skills, is computer-based with fast results and is widely accepted by universities as well. PTE Home is a speaking-and-listening test used for other routes and is not accepted for study.
- LanguageCert: International ESOL SELT, Academic SELT and General SELT, available at approved centres in India.
- PSI Services (UK) Ltd: Skills for English UKVI, available outside the UK only and aligned to CEFR B1/B2.
- Trinity College London: Integrated Skills in English (ISE) at the level the course requires, available inside the UK only, so relevant to students already in the country. GESE is speaking and listening only and is not accepted for study.
- Not SELTs: standard IELTS Academic, standard PTE Academic, TOEFL iBT, Duolingo English Test, Cambridge C1 Advanced. Universities may accept any of these for degree-level courses under their own assessment, but they cannot be used where the visa itself needs a SELT.
- Alternatives to any test for the visa: a UK GCSE, A level or Scottish Higher in English; a degree taught in English and assessed as equivalent by Ecctis; or nationality of a listed majority-English-speaking country. Indian nationals rely on the university's assessment or a SELT.
CEFR B2, B1 and IELTS bands: what the visa levels mean for Indian test-takers
The Common European Framework describes six levels from A1 to C2. B1 is an independent user who can handle everyday situations and study at foundation level; B2 is an independent user who can follow lectures, write structured essays and take part in seminars, the level UKVI ties to degree study. Each approved SELT provider publishes the band or score it treats as B1 and B2, and the university's requirement of 6.0–6.5 sits above the B2 threshold, which is why meeting the course requirement automatically clears the visa level.
Indian test-takers most often fall short in Writing, where a 5.5 against a 6.0 requirement is common even when Listening and Reading are 7.0 or higher. Universities that specify a minimum per component will not round up; a 6.5 overall with a 5.0 in Writing fails a "no band below 5.5" rule. The fix is either a retake focused on Task 2 essays, a one-skill retake where the provider offers it and the university accepts it, or a pre-sessional English course that removes the condition on completion.
Timing: a SELT is valid for two years for the visa, and universities generally accept IELTS results up to two years old as well. Take the test after your offer conditions are known but at least three months before the CAS is due, so a retake is possible. Results for computer-delivered IELTS typically arrive within a few days; allow longer for paper.
How to meet the IELTS requirement for the UK: a short plan
Read the course page, not the university home page
Note the overall and per-band minimums for your exact course and intake. Business and law courses often set higher Writing bands than the overall suggests.
Decide whether you need the UKVI version
Degree-level course at a university that assesses English itself: IELTS Academic is enough, or you may not need a test at all. Foundation, diploma, English course, or a university that insists on a SELT: book IELTS for UKVI at an approved centre.
Check for a waiver first
If your degree was English-medium or your 12th English mark is high, ask the university whether a medium-of-instruction letter or board certificate meets its requirement before paying for a test.
Book 3–4 months before the CAS deadline
That leaves room for one retake. For a September intake, test by May; for January, by September.
Send the result the way the university asks
Many verify electronically using your Test Report Form number; some want the form uploaded. For the visa, the university records the result on your CAS, and UKVI can check UKVI-numbered results directly.
Consider a pre-sessional course if you are 0.5 short
A 6–12 week university English course before the degree usually removes the condition on successful completion. It adds fees and living costs but avoids a lost intake.
Do not book IELTS for UKVI unless you need it
Frequently asked questions
What IELTS score is required for the UK?
Universities typically require 6.0–6.5 overall for bachelor's and master's courses with no band below 5.5, and 6.5–7.0 for MBAs, law and education; medicine and health courses often ask 7.0–7.5. Verified 2026-27 examples: Teesside MSc Computer Science 6.0, Coventry MSc Computer Science 6.5 with no band under 5.5, Strathclyde MBA 6.5.
Is IELTS for UKVI mandatory for a UK student visa?
No, not for degree-level courses. The university can assess your English itself and record it on the CAS, so standard IELTS Academic, another accepted test or a waiver is enough. IELTS for UKVI or another approved SELT is mandatory only for courses below degree level or where the university requires a SELT.
Which IELTS do UK universities ask for: Academic or IELTS for UKVI?
Nothing in content, format or scoring. IELTS for UKVI is taken at Home Office-approved centres with extra identity checks and carries a UKVI number, so it counts as a Secure English Language Test for the visa and is valid for that purpose for 2 years. Universities accept both for admission.
What is CEFR B2 in IELTS terms for the UK visa?
B2 is the English level UKVI requires for degree-level courses; B1 applies below degree level. Each approved test provider publishes the score it treats as B2. University requirements of 6.0–6.5 overall sit above that threshold, which is why meeting the course requirement clears the visa level as well.
Which English tests are accepted for the UK student visa besides IELTS?
The approved SELTs for applicants in India are PTE Academic UKVI, LanguageCert Academic or International ESOL SELT and Skills for English UKVI, alongside IELTS for UKVI. TOEFL and Duolingo are not SELTs, but universities may accept them for degree-level courses as their own assessment.
How long is an IELTS score valid for UK admission and the visa?
GOV.UK requires a SELT to have been awarded within the 2 years before your visa application. Universities generally apply the same two-year window for admission. Take the test at least 3–4 months before your CAS deadline so a retake is possible if one band falls short.
Can I get into a UK university with IELTS 6.0?
Yes, at many universities and courses. Teesside admits MSc Computer Science applicants with 6.0 overall, and 6.0 is a common bachelor's requirement. Coventry asks 6.5 for the same MSc and MBAs often want 6.5–7.0, so a 6.0 narrows but does not close your options; a pre-sessional course can bridge 0.5.
Do UK universities accept IELTS with one band below 5.5?
Usually not where the course page states a per-band minimum. Coventry's MSc Computer Science requires no component below 5.5, and a 5.0 in Writing fails that rule however high the overall. Options are a retake, a single-skill retake where accepted, or a pre-sessional course that removes the condition.
