Build a budget for United Kingdom

A one-year master's in the UK costs most Indian students £30,000–£50,000 all-in (about ₹38–63 lakh): typical tuition of £9,000–£30,000 (some Russell Group courses charge more), living costs of £900–£1,300 a month outside London or £1,300–£1,400 in London, plus £558 visa fee and £776 a year health surcharge. A three-year bachelor's runs £11,400–£38,000 a year in tuition alone, so budget ₹45 lakh to ₹1.5 crore for the degree.
How much does it cost to study in the UK for Indian students?
There is no single UK tuition fee. Universities set their own international fees, there is no cap for overseas students (the £9,790 cap for 2026-27 applies only to home students in England), and the same MSc title can cost £17,000 at a modern university and £34,470 at a Russell Group one. The British Council's official Study UK guidance puts international postgraduate fees at £9,000–£30,000 a year and undergraduate fees at £11,400–£38,000 a year, with humanities cheapest and laboratory and clinical degrees most expensive. Those are typical ranges, not ceilings: some Russell Group courses, such as the Glasgow MSc below, charge more.
Living costs are the second big variable, and the split is simple: London or not London. Study UK budgets £1,300–£1,400 a month in London and £900–£1,300 a month in the rest of the UK for accommodation, bills, food and transport. The Home Office uses a stricter figure for the visa, £1,529 a month in London and £1,171 elsewhere, which you must hold in the bank for 9 months whether or not you end up spending it.
Put together, a typical Indian student on a one-year master's outside London spends around £32,000 (about ₹40 lakh) including visa costs; the same course in London or at a high-fee Russell Group university reaches £48,000–£50,000 (about ₹61–63 lakh). Everything below is broken down so you can build your own number rather than trust an average.
UK tuition fees for international students in 2026-27
Ranges are the British Council's published figures; the named courses are real 2026-27 international fees read from the university pages on 26 September 2026 to show where the middle and the top of the market sit. Fees are per academic year and rise most years, so a three-year bachelor's will not cost three times the first-year fee.
| Level / example | Fee per year (GBP) | Approx. INR | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Bachelor's (all subjects, range) | £11,400–£38,000 | ₹14.5–48.3 lakh | 3 years in England, Wales, NI; 4 in Scotland |
| Master's taught (all subjects, range) | £9,000–£30,000 | ₹11.4–38.1 lakh | 1 year full time for most MSc/MA; some Russell Group courses cost more |
| MSc Computer Science, Teesside University | £17,000 | ₹21.6 lakh | January, May or September start |
| MSc Computer Science, Coventry University | £19,500 | ₹24.8 lakh | +£1,900 placement fee if a placement year is added |
| MSc Data Science & Artificial Intelligence, University of Glasgow | £34,470 | ₹43.8 lakh | £2,000 deposit at offer; Russell Group |
| MSc International Business, University of Glasgow | £34,470 | ₹43.8 lakh | Same band as science at Glasgow |
| Medicine, dentistry, veterinary (undergraduate) | Top of the £38,000 range and above | ₹48 lakh+ | Clinical years cost more; check the course page |
| Home-student fee cap in England (for comparison) | £9,790 | ₹12.4 lakh | Does not apply to Indian students |

Cost of living in the UK for students: London vs outside London
Monthly averages published by Study UK. Rent is the item that decides your budget: university halls include bills, private rooms do not. Indian students typically land at the lower end outside London by sharing a house and cooking, and at the upper end in London whatever they do.
| Expense (per month) | London | Rest of the UK |
|---|---|---|
| Student halls, bills included | £848 (≈ ₹1.08 lakh) | £664 (≈ ₹84,300) |
| Room in shared private house, without bills | £750 (≈ ₹95,300) | £554 (≈ ₹70,400) |
| Household bills (gas, electricity, water, broadband, TV licence) | £140 (≈ ₹17,800) | £80 (≈ ₹10,200) |
| Groceries | £155 (≈ ₹19,700) | £116 (≈ ₹14,700) |
| Socialising and eating out | £150 (≈ ₹19,100) | £80 (≈ ₹10,200) |
| Public transport (student monthly pass) | £103 (≈ ₹13,100) | £54 (≈ ₹6,900) |
| Mobile phone, SIM only | £18 (≈ ₹2,300) | £18 (≈ ₹2,300) |
| Student gym | £20 (≈ ₹2,500) | £15 (≈ ₹1,900) |
| Typical monthly total | £1,300–£1,400 (≈ ₹1.65–1.78 lakh) | £900–£1,300 (≈ ₹1.14–1.65 lakh) |
| Home Office maintenance figure for the visa | £1,529 (≈ ₹1.94 lakh) | £1,171 (≈ ₹1.49 lakh) |
Source: Study UK (British Council) average living costs, and GOV.UK Student visa money page, read 26 Sep 2026. £1 = ₹127. Cities Indian students favour outside London — Manchester, Birmingham, Leeds, Glasgow, Coventry, Nottingham — sit inside the rest-of-UK band.
What does a full year in the UK actually cost? Three worked totals
Each scenario adds tuition, 12 months of living at the Study UK midpoint, the £558 visa fee and the health surcharge for a 16-month master's visa (£1,164: one full year plus a half-year charge). Flights, the TB test, deposit transfer charges and a laptop are extra.
| Scenario | Tuition | Living (12 months) | Visa + IHS | Total GBP | Total INR |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| MSc at a modern university outside London (e.g. Teesside £17,000) | £17,000 | £13,200 | £1,722 | £31,922 | ≈ ₹40.5 lakh |
| MSc at a Russell Group university outside London (e.g. Glasgow £34,470) | £34,470 | £13,200 | £1,722 | £49,392 | ≈ ₹62.7 lakh |
| MSc in London at the top of the British Council range (£30,000; some courses cost more) | £30,000 | £16,200 | £1,722 | £47,922 | ≈ ₹60.9 lakh |
| Bachelor's, 3 years outside London at £20,000 a year (IHS £2,716) | £60,000 | £39,600 | £3,274 | £102,874 | ≈ ₹1.31 crore |
Living midpoints: £1,100 a month outside London, £1,350 in London (Study UK). IHS from the GOV.UK surcharge rule; fees from the university pages named above. £1 = ₹127. Tuition for later years of a bachelor's usually rises; this row holds it flat.
How do Indian students pay for a UK degree?
Most self-funded Indian students combine three sources. First, an education loan: public banks (SBI, Bank of Baroda, Union Bank and others) lend against collateral at lower rates and cover fees plus living costs; NBFC and international lenders such as Prodigy Finance or MPOWER-style providers lend without collateral for approved universities at higher rates and usually only for master's courses. UKVI accepts a sanction letter as proof of funds, so the loan can double as your visa evidence. None of these are recommendations; compare processing fees, moratorium periods and whether interest during study is simple or compounded.
Second, scholarships. Fully funded awards such as Chevening and Commonwealth cover fees, a stipend and flights, but are competitive and require work experience or a development focus. Far more Indian students receive automatic university discounts: Glasgow, for example, lists a £12,500 India Excellence Award and GREAT Scholarships worth £10,000 on its 2026-27 course pages. These reduce the fee on your CAS and therefore the money you must show.
Third, part-time work. Degree-level students can work 20 hours a week in term time and full time in vacations. At the April 2026 National Living Wage of £12.71 an hour (age 21 and over; £10.85 for 18 to 20), 20 hours is £254 a week before tax, roughly ₹32,000. Over a 30-week teaching year that is up to about £7,600 (≈ ₹9.7 lakh), which realistically covers rent outside London but never tuition. Treat it as a cushion, not a funding plan; the visa officer will not count expected earnings as funds.
Nine ways to cut the cost of studying in the UK
- Choose a one-year master's over a two-year format elsewhere: one year of fees and living, and you enter the job market a year earlier.
- Compare the same course across a modern university and a Russell Group one: the 2026-27 gap on a computing MSc is £17,000 for Computer Science at Teesside versus £34,470 for Data Science & Artificial Intelligence at Glasgow. Rankings matter less to UK employers than Indian students assume; the degree class and your project matter more.
- Study outside London unless the course is London-specific: rent alone is roughly £185–£200 a month cheaper (halls £848 against £664, private rooms £750 against £554) and the visa maintenance requirement drops by £358 a month.
- Apply early for university scholarships; many automatic international awards are applied at offer stage and close by March or April for a September start.
- Take university halls in year one if the price includes bills; move to a shared private house in later years once you know the city.
- Cook: a grocery budget of £116–£155 a month assumes home cooking. Indian groceries are widely available in every city with a large Indian community.
- Get a 16–25 Railcard or the local student bus pass; in London the 18+ Student Oyster photocard gives 30% off travelcards.
- Use the International Student Identity Card and university software licences instead of buying tools; most universities give free Microsoft 365 and cloud credits.
- Pay fees in instalments if the university offers it (many split the balance into two or three payments after the deposit), and transfer when the rupee is strong rather than on the due date.

Frequently asked questions
How much does it cost to study in the UK for Indian students?
Expect £30,000–£50,000 (about ₹38–63 lakh) for a one-year master's including tuition, living costs and visa fees, and £11,400–£38,000 a year in tuition alone for a bachelor's. The exact total depends on the university's fee and whether you live in London or elsewhere.
What are UK master's fees for Indian students in rupees?
International master's fees run £9,000–£30,000 a year, or roughly ₹11.4–38 lakh at ₹127 to the pound. Real 2026-27 examples: £17,000 (₹21.6 lakh) at Teesside, £19,500 (₹24.8 lakh) at Coventry and £34,470 (₹43.8 lakh) at Glasgow for an MSc in data science and artificial intelligence.
What is the cost of living in the UK for students per month?
The British Council's Study UK guidance budgets £1,300–£1,400 a month in London and £900–£1,300 in the rest of the UK, about ₹1.65–1.78 lakh versus ₹1.14–1.65 lakh. Rent is the largest item: £848 for halls in London against £664 elsewhere, bills included.
Is studying in London much more expensive than the rest of the UK?
Yes, on living costs: about £200–£400 more a month for rent, bills and transport, so £2,400–£4,800 a year. The visa also requires £1,529 a month in London against £1,171 elsewhere, an extra £3,222 to show for 9 months. Tuition differences are set by the university, not the city.
How much bank balance do I need to show for a UK student visa?
The outstanding first-year tuition on your CAS plus £1,529 a month for London or £1,171 a month outside London, for 9 months: £13,761 or £10,539 in living funds. The total must sit in your or a parent's account for 28 consecutive days before you apply.
Can I cover my UK living costs with a part-time job?
Partly. Twenty hours a week at the £12.71 National Living Wage is £254 a week before tax, roughly £1,000 a month, which covers rent and food in most cities outside London but not in London and never tuition. Work is capped at 20 hours in term time on a Student visa.
How much is the UK student visa and health surcharge?
The Student visa fee is £558 (about ₹71,000) and the Immigration Health Surcharge is £776 per year of visa (about ₹98,600). A one-year master's visa of about 16 months is charged £1,164 in IHS, so the combined upfront cost is around £1,722 or ₹2.2 lakh.
Which is the cheapest way to study in the UK from India?
A one-year master's at a modern university outside London with an automatic international scholarship: fees of £17,000–£20,000 minus £2,000–£5,000 in awards, living costs near £900 a month, and 20 hours of part-time work. That brings the year to roughly £28,000–£30,000, about ₹35–38 lakh.
