An MS in computer science in Germany is a four-semester, 120-ECTS degree taught in English, with tuition of €0 at Saarland, Bonn, Passau, TU Berlin and TU Darmstadt, €1,500 a semester in Baden-Württemberg (Stuttgart, Freiburg) and €6,000 a semester at TUM. Expect an APS certificate, English proof from IELTS 5.5 to 7.0 depending on the university (the visa section expects C1-level proof), and a GRE or GATE score at TUM, Saarland and TU Darmstadt. Two years cost about ₹24–33 lakh at a tuition-free university and ₹50–58 lakh at TUM, and graduates get up to 18 months to find a job in a market that has cooled since 2023.
Why do Indian students choose an MS in computer science in Germany?
The draw is the cost structure. Five of the universities below charge no tuition, only a semester contribution of roughly €130–395 (about ₹14,000–43,000). Where tuition exists it is moderate: €1,500 a semester in Baden-Württemberg (about ₹6.5 lakh for the degree) and €6,000 a semester at the Technical University of Munich (about ₹26 lakh). The visa needs one figure, €11,904 in a blocked account (about ₹13.0 lakh).
The programmes are research-heavy and selective: Stuttgart's English M.Sc. takes about 40 students a year. German IT hiring has also cooled, so the case for Germany is low cost and a long job-search window, not an assumed job.
Which German universities offer an MS in computer science in English, and what do they charge?
These eight programmes are English-taught and run four semesters (120 credits at TUM, Saarland and TU Berlin, which state it). Tuition is the non-EU rate that applies to Indians; every university also charges a semester contribution. AI masters in Germany are mostly tracks of these degrees: TU Darmstadt runs a dedicated AI and Machine Learning M.Sc., and TUM and Stuttgart let you specialise in machine learning, so the broad M.Sc. keeps more doors open. Open the linked page before applying, because fees and tests change between rounds.
| University and programme | Tuition per semester | Semester fee | English proof | Indian-applicant extras and deadline |
|---|---|---|---|---|

How much does an MS in computer science in Germany cost in rupees?
Costs depend almost entirely on the fee regime. Living costs use the DAAD band of €900–1,200 a month; the blocked account is money you spend, not an extra fee.
| Cost item | EUR | Approx. INR | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Tuition, Saarland, Bonn, Passau, TU Berlin, Darmstadt | €0 | ₹0 | Semester contribution still payable |
| Tuition, Stuttgart or Freiburg, 4 semesters | €6,000 | ₹6.5 lakh | €1,500 per semester |
| Tuition, TUM, 4 semesters | €24,000 | ₹26.2 lakh | €6,000 per semester; waivers are separate applications |
| Semester contributions, 4 semesters | €520–1,580 | ₹57,000–1.72 lakh | Range across the tuition-free universities listed: Passau about €130 to Saarland about €395; TUM charges €97 |
| Living costs, 24 months (DAAD band) | €21,600–28,800 | ₹23.5–31.4 lakh | Average student spend is €876 a month (2023 survey) |
| Blocked account for the visa | €11,904 per year | ₹13.0 lakh | €992 a month; banks charge €70–150 to open it |
| Total, tuition-free university | ≈ €22,100–30,400 | ≈ ₹24–33 lakh | Before part-time income |
| Total, Stuttgart or Freiburg | ≈ €28,400–35,600 | ≈ ₹31–39 lakh | Adds €6,000 tuition |
| Total, TUM at €6,000 a semester | ≈ €46,000–53,200 | ≈ ₹50–58 lakh | Adds €24,000 tuition unless waived |

What do German universities ask from an Indian BTech or BSc graduate?
Each department publishes its own admission regulation, so treat this as the pattern across the pages read on 26 Sep 2026, not a promise of eligibility.
| Requirement | What the official pages say | What it means for you |
|---|---|---|
| Degree | Stuttgart: bachelor of at least 6 semesters in CS or a close subject. Saarland: at least 180 CP or equivalent. TUM: equivalent to its own B.Sc. Informatics | A 4-year BTech/BE in CS or IT fits all. A 3-year BSc CS or BCA is formally possible at Stuttgart and Saarland but weighed on content; mechanical or ECE graduates are usually redirected |
| Grades | Saarland: CGPA 75% (3.00 on 4.0) and top 10% of the class as a minimum | Aim well above first class and ask your department for a rank letter |
| Subject content | TU Berlin: 36 CP fundamentals, 18 CP maths, 30 CP more CS. Saarland: discrete maths, analysis, linear algebra, stochastics, formal methods, complexity, databases | Map your semester subjects to these headings; missing maths or theory is the commonest reason for rejection |
| GRE / GATE | TUM: GRE Quant 164, Writing 4.0, or GATE. Saarland: GRE or GATE mandatory, no minimum. Darmstadt: GRE 155 / 165 / 3.5 or GATE CS 750 as test substitute | Book GRE General by December; keep your GATE scorecard |
| English | IELTS 7.0 at Stuttgart, Freiburg, Bonn, Saarland; IELTS 6.5 at TUM. German Missions in India expect C1-level proof and do not recognise Duolingo, PTE or TOEFL Home Edition | Take IELTS Academic aiming for 7.0 so one score serves admission and visa |

How to apply for an MS in computer science in Germany: timeline for the October 2027 intake
Saarland's early round closes on 15 November and Stuttgart's on 15 January, so a student finishing a BTech in 2027 should start now.
October 2026: shortlist five to eight programmes
Use the DAAD database and each admission regulation. Mix a reach (TUM, Saarland), solid choices (Stuttgart, Freiburg, TU Berlin, Darmstadt) and a safer option (Passau, Bonn).
October–December 2026: APS certificate and GRE/GATE
Send marksheets and degree to APS India. Sit GRE General (TUM wants Quant 164 and Writing 4.0) or keep your GATE scorecard.
November 2026–January 2027: IELTS Academic
Target 7.0 overall. Stuttgart no longer accepts MOI letters, and the visa section rejects Duolingo, PTE and TOEFL Home Edition.
15 November 2026–March 2027: Saarland, Stuttgart and uni-assist
Saarland's early round (15 November) needs transcripts, CV, two referee forms, APS and GRE/GATE; the late deadline is 15 May 2027. Stuttgart closes on 15 January 2027 with its supplementary form. Request the uni-assist VPD for TUM and TU Berlin early; it takes weeks.
February–31 May 2027: TUM, Freiburg, Passau, Bonn
TUM opens on 1 February and recommends 31 March for visa cases, with 31 May as the hard deadline. Freiburg's non-EU window is 15 April–31 May. If invited, plan for the TUM test between July and September.
June–August 2027: offers, blocked account, visa
Open the €11,904 blocked account, arrange health insurance and book the visa appointment on the Consular Services Portal.
September–October 2027: arrive and enrol
Lectures start mid-October. Register your address, enrol and apply for the Section 16b residence permit before the visa expires.
What does the official labour-market data say about IT jobs in Germany in 2026?
The Federal Employment Agency (Bundesagentur für Arbeit, BA) publishes the most reliable figures: a large, well-paid IT workforce, a cooler hiring market than in 2022–23, and a sizeable Indian presence.
| Indicator (Germany) | Latest figure | What it tells an applicant |
|---|---|---|
| Typical gross pay, full-time IT workers, 2025 | €6,114 a month (≈ ₹6.7 lakh); €6,501 (≈ ₹7.1 lakh) in roles needing a four-year degree or equivalent | Gross, before German tax and social contributions; the all-occupation figure is €4,448 |
| Unemployment rate, IT occupations, 2025 | 4.5% (up 0.8 points); 3.5% for degree-level experts | Rising, but graduates fare better than the average IT worker |
| Vacancies registered with the BA, 2025 | about 13,000 on average (down 22%, lowest since 2015); software-developer shortage no longer visible | Shows the cooling; the BA counts only vacancies employers register with it, so it understates total demand |
| Indian nationals in IT jobs, June 2024 | about 30,000 of the 165,000 foreign IT employees (foreigners are 15% of all IT employees) | Indians are the largest non-EU group |
Sources: Bundesagentur für Arbeit, Blickpunkt Arbeitsmarkt Kapitel 2.2 Informatik (August 2026) and IKT-Berufe report (June 2025), read 26 Sep 2026. €1 = ₹109. Statistics describe averages, not your outcome.
What can you do after the degree: the 18-month permit, Blue Card and student jobs
During the master's, Section 16b of the Residence Act lets you work up to 140 days a year; a day of up to four hours counts as half a day. Student assistant jobs at your own university do not count against it, and a compulsory internship belongs to the study purpose.
After graduating, Section 20 gives a permit of up to 18 months to find a job that fits your degree, provided you can support yourself. A qualifying offer then converts to an EU Blue Card. The 2026 thresholds on the federal portal are €50,700 (about ₹55.3 lakh) a year in general and €45,934.20 (about ₹50.1 lakh) for shortage occupations, which include academic STEM professionals, and for graduates within three years of their degree, in both cases with Federal Employment Agency approval.
How can you fund an MS in computer science in Germany?
- TUM scholarship for international students: a one-time grant of €500–1,800 per semester based on grades and finances, reapplied for each semester. TUM also grants fee waivers on separate applications filed by the deadline.
- Saarbrücken Graduate School of Computer Science (a combined master's-and-PhD route): €992 a month in the preparatory phase, plus up to €550 for research-assistant work, per its DAAD entry.
- Education loans: Indian students typically choose between collateral-backed loans, which usually offer larger amounts, and non-collateral loans, from public-sector banks such as SBI, private banks, and specialist cross-border lenders such as Prodigy Finance or MPOWER (examples, not endorsements; compare terms yourself). Check current foreign-remittance and tax-at-source rules before transferring the blocked-account amount.

Frequently asked questions
What does an MS in computer science in Germany cost for Indian students?
Tuition is €0 at Saarland, Bonn, Passau, TU Berlin and TU Darmstadt, €1,500 a semester in Stuttgart and Freiburg, and €6,000 a semester at TUM. Including living costs of €900–1,200 a month, two years total about ₹24–33 lakh at a tuition-free university, ₹31–39 lakh in Baden-Württemberg and ₹50–58 lakh at TUM.
Is GRE required for MS in computer science in Germany?
It depends on the university. TUM requires a GRE (Quant 164, Writing 4.0) or GATE score from Indian applicants. Saarland makes GRE or GATE mandatory with no minimum, and TU Darmstadt accepts GRE 155/165/3.5 or GATE CS 750 instead of its entrance test. Stuttgart, Freiburg and Bonn do not list it on the pages read.
What IELTS score do German universities want for MS in computer science?
It runs from 5.5 (Passau, listed on DAAD) and 6.5 (TUM) to 7.0 at Stuttgart, Freiburg, Bonn and Saarland. Because the German Missions in India expect C1-level proof for the visa, IELTS Academic 7.0 is the safest single target for Indian applicants.
Can I apply for MS in computer science in Germany with a 3-year BSc or a non-CS BTech?
A 3-year BSc in computer science or similar is formally accepted by Stuttgart (6 semesters) and Saarland (180 credits) if the content matches, but TUM wants equivalence to its own B.Sc. Informatics. Mechanical or electronics BTech graduates are usually directed to engineering or embedded-systems master's instead.
When are the deadlines for MS in computer science in Germany?
For October entry: Saarland 15 November (early) or 15 May, Stuttgart 15 January, TUM 31 May (31 March recommended if you need a visa), Freiburg and Passau 31 May. TU Berlin publishes dates per round, such as 1 December–28 February for summer 2027.
Is the IT job market in Germany good for Indian MS graduates in 2026?
It is large but cooler than before. The Federal Employment Agency reports IT unemployment of 4.5% (3.5% for degree-level experts), vacancies at their lowest since 2015 and no visible software-developer shortage in 2025, while about 30,000 Indian nationals work in IT.
