An MS in engineering in Canada is either a research MASc (about CAD 10,082 a year at UBC, ₹6.8 lakh, usually funded by your supervisor) or a self-funded course-based MEng (CAD 21,163 in year one at Concordia, ₹14.3 lakh, up to CAD 72,850 at Toronto, ₹49.3 lakh). Entry needs a 4-year BE/BTech, about 75% to 76% and IELTS 6.5 to 7.0. A master's of 8 months or more earns a 3-year PGWP.
What does an MS in engineering in Canada look like: MASc, MEng or an MSc?
Canadian engineering faculties rarely use the label "MS". The two degrees you will meet are the Master of Applied Science (MASc), a two-year thesis degree, and the Master of Engineering (MEng), a course-based degree. At Toronto the MASc is full-time and funded, while the MEng is "self-funded". Waterloo's electrical and computer engineering department says MEng students "do not have a supervisor, nor do they receive financial assistance".
Selection for the funded route is tight. UBC's mechanical engineering MASc recorded 103 applications, 22 offers and 15 new registrations in 2025; its MEng is easier to enter (48 offers from 85 applications) but costs far more. A supervisor must accept you for the MASc.

A four-year BE or BTech is the entry ticket; a three-year diploma or BSc is not
Does a master's from Canada make you a licensed engineer? Accreditation, the Washington Accord and the P.Eng
Engineers Canada states that its Accreditation Board accredits undergraduate engineering programs, and these provide the academic requirement for professional licensure. A master's does not replace the accredited bachelor's. To practise you need a licence from a provincial or territorial regulator. Generally that means an accredited degree or equivalent, provincial work experience, the Professional Practice Examination, good character and English or French ability.
India, through the National Board of Accreditation, is a Washington Accord signatory (from 2014), but the Accord covers only NBA-accredited programmes at institutions the NBA accepts as Tier 1. If your BE or BTech came from such a programme, a regulator may treat it as substantially equivalent; if not, expect extra exams. Ask the regulator in your province.
How to apply for an MS in engineering in Canada from India: timeline for September 2027
The earliest deadline is 1 January 2027 (Toronto MASc), so the window for research degrees is October to December 2026. Toronto's MEng also has a January 2027 intake, but its international deadline of 15 September 2026 has passed.
August to October 2026: pick MASc or MEng
Choose a funded MASc or a self-funded MEng by budget. For MASc, shortlist two or three supervisors from faculty profiles.
September to November 2026: IELTS and documents
Book IELTS Academic early: 7.0 with 6.5 per component for Toronto, 6.5 for UBC (6.0 each band), Alberta, McMaster and Waterloo's engineering departments (6.0 in writing and speaking). Collect marksheets, degree certificate, CV, letter of intent and referees.
November 2026 to February 2027: submit
Dates are in the table above. Application fees are non-refundable: UBC lists CAD 168.25 (≈ ₹11,400) for international applicants.
January to May 2027: interviews, offers, deposits
McMaster requires an online interview. Pay deposits under the RBI Liberalised Remittance Scheme and ask your bank about current TCS rules.
April to June 2027: study permit
Master's programmes at public universities need no provincial attestation letter. Apply with the offer letter, proof of CAD 23,448 (≈ ₹15.9 lakh) for living costs plus first-year tuition plus return transport, and the CAD 150 permit (≈ ₹10,200) and CAD 85 biometrics (≈ ₹5,800) fees. If you choose a Quebec university, check the Quebec CAQ requirement with the university. McMaster warns processing can take three months or more.
June to August 2027: housing, insurance, spouse
Book housing and health cover. A spouse can get an open work permit only if you study a master's of 16 months or longer, so a 12-month MEng usually does not qualify; a two-year MASc, the extended Toronto MEng (confirm its length first, as one Toronto page says 16 to 24 months) and Waterloo's 16-month MEng do.
September 2027 to graduation: stay full-time, then apply for the PGWP
You can work up to 24 hours a week off campus during term. Take IELTS General Training (6.0 in every band is CLB 7), CELPIP or PTE Core before your final term and apply for the PGWP within 180 days of completing.
Is an MS in engineering in Canada worth it? Official job outlooks for 2025-2027

After an MS in engineering in Canada: PGWP, STEM-category Express Entry and the Ontario change
Graduates of a master's degree of at least 8 months can apply for a 3-year post-graduation work permit (fee CAD 255, about ₹17,300: CAD 155 work permit plus CAD 100 open work permit holder fee) if they studied full time at a PGWP-eligible institution and apply within 180 days of completion. IRCC requires CLB 7 in all four abilities and sets no field-of-study requirement for master's degrees. Full-time status is needed in every semester except the last.
IRCC's STEM category lists civil (NOC 21300), mechanical (21301), electrical and electronics (21310), industrial and manufacturing (21321) and geological engineers (21331), and needs at least 12 months of full-time experience in a listed occupation in the past three years. Ontario's nominee programme says the new Ontario Workforce Priority stream has launched and all other streams are closed, so check the current OINP and IRCC pages before planning around a provincial stream.
Funding an MS in engineering in Canada: assistantships, scholarships and education loans
- MASc funding: UBC reports a median net balance of CAD 24,613 a year (≈ ₹16.7 lakh) after tuition and fees for its mechanical MASc students, but the money depends on a supervisor.
- MEng funding: Toronto says MEng students are generally not eligible for awards, though they can apply for teaching assistantships.
- Education loans: for an MEng most families use a collateral-backed Indian bank loan; Prodigy and MPOWER are examples of cross-border lenders, not recommendations. IRCC accepts a bank loan letter as proof of funds, and the permit still needs CAD 23,448 (≈ ₹15.9 lakh) plus first-year tuition shown.
Frequently asked questions
How much does an MS in engineering in Canada cost for Indian students?
Research MASc tuition is about CAD 10,082 a year at UBC (₹6.8 lakh) and CAD 33,460 at Toronto (₹22.7 lakh), while course-based MEng tuition runs from CAD 21,163 in year one at Concordia (₹14.3 lakh) to CAD 72,850 at Toronto (₹49.3 lakh). Add CAD 23,448 (₹15.9 lakh) for living costs on the study permit.
Is a masters in mechanical engineering in Canada fully funded?
The MASc usually is; the MEng is not. UBC reports a median of CAD 34,362 a year (₹23.3 lakh) for its mechanical MASc students, and Toronto says admitted MASc students are funded. Toronto and Waterloo call the MEng self-funded, so budget CAD 21,000 to 72,850 (₹14.2 to 49.3 lakh) for tuition alone.
What is the difference between an MEng and a MASc in Canada?
A MASc is a two-year thesis degree under a supervisor and is the usual path to a PhD. An MEng is course-based, can be finished in about 12 to 16 months, has no supervisor at Waterloo and is self-funded. Both earn a 3-year PGWP.
Is a Canadian master's degree enough to become a professional engineer (P.Eng)?
No. Licensure generally needs an accredited undergraduate engineering degree or equivalent, provincial work experience and the Professional Practice Examination. A master's helps your career but does not replace that base; ask the provincial regulator how it assesses your Indian degree.
Does the Washington Accord cover Indian engineering degrees in Canada?
Partly. India joined through the National Board of Accreditation in 2014, but the Accord covers only NBA-accredited programmes at Tier 1 institutions. A BE or BTech from such a programme can be assessed as substantially equivalent by the provincial regulator; other degrees may face extra exams. Confirm with the regulator in your province.
Can I apply for an MS in engineering in Canada with a diploma or a BSc?
It is difficult. Waterloo asks for a four-year Honours Bachelor of Applied Science or equivalent, McMaster for a four-year engineering degree and Alberta for a 3.0 admission GPA from an equivalent four-year degree. Email the graduate office first.
Do I need the GRE for engineering master's programmes in Canada?
Usually not. UBC lists the GRE as optional for its mechanical engineering MASc and Waterloo says it is not required for electrical and computer engineering. IELTS matters more: 7.0 with 6.5 per band at Toronto, and 6.5 at UBC, Alberta, McMaster and Waterloo's engineering departments.
Is the job market good for engineers in Canada in 2026?
It varies by trade and province. Job Bank rates mechanical engineers Limited in Ontario and Moderate in Alberta and British Columbia, civil engineers Good in Quebec and Saskatchewan, and projects a moderate risk of shortage nationally to 2033. The median mechanical engineer wage is CAD 45.67 an hour (about ₹3,093).
