Admission needs about two years of full-time work experience, a GMAT (Rotman treats 525 on GMAT Focus or 309 on the GRE as competitive) unless waived, and IELTS 7.0. Why do an MBA in Canada, and which formats exist?
Canada's MBAs are a small set of well-known schools rather than a long tail: Rotman (Toronto), Ivey (Western, in London, Ontario), Schulich (York, Toronto), Smith (Queen's, Kingston), UBC Sauder (Vancouver), Desautels (McGill, Montreal), Alberta, HEC Montréal and a group of smaller provincial programmes. The pitch to an Indian applicant is a two-part one: a top-tier degree in a market that recruits MBAs into banking, consulting, technology and consumer goods in Toronto and Vancouver, followed by a 3-year open work permit and an immigration system that rewards a Canadian master's degree.
Formats differ more than rankings. Rotman runs both a 20-month Full-Time MBA with a four-month paid internship and a One-Year MBA for candidates with advanced standing; Smith's full-time MBA is 12 months (16 with the optional internship); Sauder's is 16 months; Schulich's standard MBA averages four 12-week terms and also offers a two-term accelerated route and a Tech MBA; Ivey is a one-year, case-method programme that moves to a January start from 2027. Length drives three things: total living cost, whether an internship fits, and whether your spouse can work, because the open work permit for spouses applies only to master's programmes of 16 months or longer.
Because an MBA is a master's degree at a public university it is exempt from the provincial attestation letter from 1 January 2026, faces no PGWP field-of-study test, and earns a 3-year PGWP even when the programme is 12 months. Statistics Canada leaves MBAs out of its graduate tuition averages because their fees sit so far above the general graduate figure.

How to apply for an MBA in Canada from India: timeline for 2027 intakes
Canadian MBAs admit in rounds from September to the following spring. Ivey starts in January from 2027; Rotman's One-Year MBA starts in May; most two-year and 16-month programmes start in August or September. Work backwards from the intake you want.
9–12 months before intake: test and shortlist
Sit the GMAT Focus (Rotman treats 525 as competitive) or GRE (309), or request a waiver pre-assessment from Ivey or Sauder if your professional designations or record support it. Shortlist by format: one-year for speed and cost (Rotman One-Year, Smith, Ivey), 16–20 months for an internship and a spouse work permit (Sauder, Rotman Full-Time, Schulich).
8–10 months before: English test and documents
Book IELTS Academic for 7.0 with 6.5 bands (or General for Ivey), collect transcripts and degree certificates, line up two or three references who have managed you, and update a results-led résumé. Prepare the leadership examples you will reuse in interviews, and in any essay a school still asks for.
6–9 months before: apply in an early round
Early rounds carry most of the scholarship money: Ivey automatically reviews international candidates of exceptional quality for awards of CAD 10,000–70,000 (complete the financial aid section of the application to be considered for merit awards), Sauder's Asia regional award application closes 8 January 2027. Pay attention to Rotman's recorded video interview and timed written assessment, which follow the application.
4–6 months before: interview, offer and deposit
Interviews are by video or in person in Indian cities during school tours. On an offer, pay the deposit (Ivey CAD 5,000, credited to tuition; Smith CAD 6,000, non-refundable on acceptance; confirm Schulich's deposit on the offer letter) under the RBI Liberalised Remittance Scheme and check the current TCS treatment with your bank. Ask for the fee schedule with instalment dates.
3–5 months before: funding
Combine savings, an Indian education loan (collateral-based for amounts of this size) and school-partnered international lenders that Ivey and Smith list, which lend without an Indian co-signer at higher rates. Match disbursements to the instalment calendar (Smith: 10 January, 1 May, 1 September 2027).
3–4 months before: study permit
As a master's at a public university the MBA needs no PAL from 1 January 2026. Apply online with the letter of acceptance, proof of CAD 23,448 living funds plus first-year tuition plus airfare (CAD 29,192 living with a spouse), a letter of explanation and, where required, an upfront medical. Pay CAD 150 plus CAD 85 biometrics.
Spouse: apply together if the programme is 16 months or longer
Sauder (16 months) and Rotman Full-Time (20 months) qualify a spouse for an open work permit for the length of your study permit; Ivey, Rotman One-Year and Smith's 12-month route do not, while Smith's optional 16-month internship route may qualify, so confirm with Smith and IRCC. File the spouse's application with yours and include the marriage certificate and your letter of acceptance.
Final term: PGWP
Take IELTS General, CELPIP or PTE Core to CLB 7 (IELTS General 6.0 in every band), then apply for the 3-year post-graduation work permit within 180 days of completion, paying CAD 255. Keep the study permit valid until you apply so you can work while it is processed.

Is an MBA in Canada worth it for Indian students? Cost, PGWP and PR
On cost, a Canadian MBA is a CAD 130,000–175,000 (₹88 lakh to ₹1.2 crore) commitment once living costs are added, comparable to a top European programme and below the leading US schools. What Canada adds is certainty after graduation: a 3-year open post-graduation work permit for any master's degree of 8 months or more, no employer sponsorship required, no field-of-study test, and a fee of CAD 255. Indian MBA graduates typically use those three years in Toronto or Vancouver to reach the salary and experience bands that make Express Entry viable.
For permanent residence, the Canadian MBA counts as a master's-level credential in the Comprehensive Ranking System, where education combined with CLB 9 English or Canadian work experience earns up to 50 skill-transferability points; job-offer points were removed on 25 March 2025, so the decisive levers are language, age and Canadian experience gained on the PGWP. Provincial routes are changing: Ontario closed its Masters Graduate stream on 30 May 2026 as part of the OINP redesign, so check the current OINP page for open streams before relying on a provincial nomination.
The return also depends on the format you chose. A 12-month programme minimises tuition-plus-living cost and gets you into the market a year earlier; a 16- or 20-month programme adds an internship (the usual route to a full-time offer) and the spouse work permit, which for a two-income household can outweigh the extra year of living costs. Make that choice explicitly, with the fee tables above and your family situation, rather than by ranking alone.

Do I need a PAL for an MBA study permit in Canada?
