A masters in computer science in Canada is either a funded 2-year thesis MSc (about CAD 10,000 a year, roughly ₹6.8 lakh, at UBC and Alberta) or a professional programme such as Toronto's MScAC (about CAD 90,050, ₹61 lakh, with a paid internship). Entry needs a 4-year BTech/BE and IELTS 6.5 to 7.0. September 2027 applications close 1 to 15 December 2026; a master's earns a 3-year PGWP.
What does a masters in computer science in Canada look like, and which route suits an Indian applicant?
Canadian universities rarely use the American label "MS". You will see the MSc (thesis), Waterloo's MMath, Toronto's Master of Science in Applied Computing (MScAC) and professional master's programmes such as SFU's. Thesis programmes run about 24 months, place you in a supervisor's group and are usually funded: UBC states a package of CAD 32,171 a year (about ₹21.8 lakh) for two years from awards and assistantships. Professional programmes run 16 to 20 months, charge far more and are built around an industry internship.
Selection is tight. UBC's data for its MSc in Computer Science show 986 applications, 72 offers and 41 registrations in 2025, an offer rate of about 7%. Toronto's Department of Computer Science does not consider international applicants for its MSc and points them to the MScAC or the direct-entry PhD. The MScAC has seven concentrations, including Artificial Intelligence and Data Science, and a mandatory internship; it reports an average of CAD 65,000 over eight months in 2026 (about ₹44 lakh) and gives no assurance of pay.
How much does an MS in CS in Canada cost? Tuition at six programmes, 2026-27
International tuition as published by each university. Thesis programmes look cheap because supervisors usually fund students. The pages read show 2026-27 fees (Toronto also lists CAD 52,570, about ₹35.6 lakh, for MScAC 2027 entry), so use them as the planning baseline for September 2027 and confirm on each page. On top, the permit office expects CAD 23,448 in living funds (₹15.9 lakh, CAD 29,192 with a spouse) plus CAD 235 (about ₹15,900) in permit and biometrics fees, and Ontario students pay about CAD 948 (₹64,200) for UHIP.
| Programme | Length | International tuition (CAD) | Approx. INR | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Toronto MScAC, entering 2026 | 16 months | CAD 50,070 tuition; CAD 90,050 estimated total | ₹33.9 lakh tuition · ₹61 lakh total | Paid 8-month internship; 2027 entry tuition CAD 52,570 (₹35.6 lakh) |
| UBC MSc Computer Science (thesis) | 2 years | CAD 10,081.65 a year, plus about CAD 1,203 (₹81,500) student fees | ₹6.8 lakh a year | Funding package CAD 32,171 a year for 2 years |
| Waterloo MMath Computer Science (thesis only) | 24 months | CAD 7,696 per term + CAD 1,014.11 incidental fees per term | ≈ ₹15.6 lakh + ₹2.1 lakh a year (3 terms) | Co-op fee CAD 836 (₹56,600) only if used |
| Alberta MSc Computing Science (thesis) | 2 years | CAD 10,518.72 a year (Fall 2026 to Summer 2027) | ₹7.1 lakh a year | Non-instructional fees extra |
| SFU MSc Computing Science (thesis) | 2 years | CAD 2,192.57 per term full-time | ₹1.5 lakh a term (≈ ₹4.5 lakh a year) | Half-rate continuing fee after six terms |
| SFU professional master's (Big Data), entering 2026/27 | 4 terms | CAD 13,856.16 per term (≈ CAD 55,400 in total) | ₹9.4 lakh a term · ≈ ₹37.5 lakh | Term fee for the first four terms; co-op included |

How to apply for an MS in computer science in Canada from India: timeline for September 2027
Four of the five programmes above close in December 2026, so the working window is October and November. Each university has its own portal.
August to October 2026: choose thesis or professional
Pick a funded thesis degree (UBC, Waterloo, Alberta, SFU) or a professional programme with an internship (MScAC, SFU professional). Waterloo says you need a supervisor to be accepted though not to apply, so email two or three faculty.
September to November 2026: IELTS and documents
Book IELTS Academic early, aiming for 7.0 with 6.5 per band for Toronto, UBC or Alberta. Collect marksheets, degree certificate, CV, statement of purpose and three referees (at least two academic at Waterloo).
1 to 15 December 2026: submit
Toronto MScAC and Waterloo close 1 December; UBC and Alberta 15 December. Application fees are non-refundable (UBC CAD 168.25, about ₹11,400, for international applicants; Alberta CAD 135, about ₹9,100).
December 2026 to April 2027: interviews and offers
MScAC interviews run December to April and nobody is admitted without one; Waterloo decides within 8 to 16 weeks of the deadline. Pay fees under the RBI Liberalised Remittance Scheme and ask your bank about current TCS treatment.
April to June 2027: study permit
Master's programmes at public universities need no provincial attestation letter. Apply with the acceptance letter, proof of CAD 23,448 (₹15.9 lakh) plus first-year tuition and return transport, and the CAD 150 (about ₹10,200) permit and CAD 85 (about ₹5,800) biometrics fees.
June to September 2027: housing, insurance, arrival
Enrol in UHIP (Ontario) or the provincial plan and book housing. Stay full-time in every semester except the last, and check the permit allows off-campus work (up to 24 hours a week in term).
Final term: CLB 7 test and PGWP
Take IELTS General Training (6.0 per band is CLB 7), CELPIP or PTE Core before graduating, then apply for the 3-year PGWP within 180 days and pay CAD 255 (about ₹17,300). A NexStudy counsellor can check this calendar against your marks before you pay any application fee.
Is an MS in computer science in Canada worth it? What the official job-market data says for 2025-2027
Job Bank (Employment and Social Development Canada) publishes three-year provincial outlooks, updated 10 December 2025. Nationally, demand and supply for both software occupations are projected to be in balance over 2024-2033, but provinces differ sharply.
| Province | Software engineers and designers (NOC 21231) | Software developers (NOC 21232) | Workers in NOC 21231 |
|---|---|---|---|
| Ontario | Very limited: employment decline expected | Limited | About 72,950 |
| British Columbia | Moderate: several new positions | Moderate | About 27,200 |
| Alberta | Moderate | Moderate | About 7,950 |
| Nova Scotia | Good | Good | About 2,000 |
| Canada, 2024-2033 | Balance | Balance | 113,100 in 2023 |
| Median hourly wage, Canada, 2023-2024 | CAD 56.49 (≈ ₹3,826); range CAD 35.00 to 91.35 | Not compared here | Ontario CAD 56.73 (≈ ₹3,842); BC CAD 62.50 (≈ ₹4,233) |
Sources: Job Bank outlook reports for NOC 21231 and 21232, 2024-2033 labour market pages and the NOC 21231 wage report, read 26 Sep 2026. Wages cover everyone in the occupation, not graduate starting pay. C$1 = ₹67.73.
What is the real job outlook for computer science graduates in Canada?
Job Bank is blunt about the entry level. Its Nova Scotia outlook says growing use of artificial intelligence has softened demand for entry-level positions and that jobseekers with a few years of experience have a significant edge over recent graduates. Ontario, with more than half of Canada's software engineers and designers, is rated Very limited for 2025-2027, partly because of restructuring in the technology sector; British Columbia is Moderate, though employment fluctuated through 2025. A Toronto fee premium is not matched by a Toronto outlook premium, so a thesis programme in Vancouver, Edmonton or Calgary is not second-best. Choose programmes with an internship or co-op and start the job search while still a student.
After an MS in computer science in Canada: PGWP, spouse work permit and permanent residence
A master's of at least 8 months, even a 16-month one, earns a 3-year post-graduation work permit if you studied full time at an eligible institution and apply within 180 days. IRCC requires CLB 7 in all four abilities (IELTS General Training 6.0 each) and sets no field-of-study requirement for master's graduates. Your spouse can get an open work permit if your programme is 16 months or longer.
Permanent residence runs mainly through Express Entry. IRCC's STEM category does not list software engineers (21231), software developers (21232) or data scientists (21211), so computing graduates mostly compete in the general rounds on language, age, education and Canadian experience. Ontario closed its OINP Masters Graduate stream on 30 May 2026 and says every stream except the new Ontario Workforce Priority stream is closed. Check the IRCC and provincial pages before building a PR plan.
Funding an MS in computer science in Canada: scholarships, assistantships and education loans
- Thesis assistantships: UBC states CAD 32,171 a year for two years for thesis master's students (about ₹21.8 lakh); Waterloo publishes its minimum MMath funding on its CS admissions page.
- Ontario Graduate Scholarship: CAD 5,000 per session, so CAD 10,000 for two sessions or CAD 15,000 (about ₹10.2 lakh) for three. International students on a study permit are eligible, nominated by the graduate unit, so it mainly helps thesis students.
- Education loans: for a professional programme most families use a collateral-backed Indian bank loan; Prodigy and MPOWER are examples of cross-border lenders, not recommendations. IRCC accepts a bank loan letter as proof of funds, but the permit still needs CAD 23,448 (about ₹15.9 lakh) plus first-year tuition shown.
Frequently asked questions
How much does an MS in computer science in Canada cost for Indian students?
A thesis MSc costs about CAD 10,082 a year at UBC and CAD 10,519 at Alberta (₹6.8 to ₹7.1 lakh); Toronto's 16-month MScAC is about CAD 90,050 all-in (₹61 lakh). Add CAD 23,448 (₹15.9 lakh) in living funds.
Can international students apply to the University of Toronto MSc in computer science?
No. The Department of Computer Science does not consider international applicants for its MSc and encourages them to apply to the MScAC or the direct-entry PhD instead. The MScAC is 16 months with a mandatory internship.
Do I need a BTech in computer science for an MS in CS in Canada?
A four-year BTech or BE is the safest profile. Toronto asks for a degree equivalent to its four-year degree, Alberta says three-year degrees normally do not qualify, and Waterloo wants an honours bachelor in computer science or engineering with at least 78%.
Is GRE required for an MS in computer science in Canada?
Usually not. UBC and Waterloo do not require it, Alberta recommends it for non-Canadian degrees, and Toronto's MScAC treats it as optional. IELTS matters more: 7.0 with 6.5 per band at Toronto, UBC and Alberta; 6.5 at Waterloo.
Which is the cheapest MS in computer science in Canada for Indian students?
On published 2026-27 tuition, SFU's thesis master's at CAD 2,192.57 a term (about ₹4.5 lakh a year) and UBC at CAD 10,082 a year are the lowest listed here. Professional programmes run from CAD 55,400 (about ₹37.5 lakh) at SFU to CAD 90,050 (₹61 lakh) at Toronto.
Are there fully funded MS in computer science programmes in Canada?
Thesis programmes come closest. UBC states a package of CAD 32,171 (about ₹21.8 lakh) a year for two years, above its CAD 10,082 (₹6.8 lakh) tuition, but it depends on a supervisor and performance, and the permit still needs proof of CAD 23,448 (₹15.9 lakh).
What are the best AI master's programmes in Canada for Indian students?
Toronto's MScAC has an Artificial Intelligence concentration with a paid internship, while Waterloo's MMath and UBC's MSc supervise machine-learning research. MScAC closes 1 December 2026; UBC closes 15 December.
Is an MS in computer science in Canada worth it in 2026?
It depends on province and experience. Job Bank rates 2025-2027 prospects for software engineers Very limited in Ontario and Moderate in British Columbia and Alberta, and notes AI has softened entry-level demand. The 3-year PGWP gives time to build experience.
Can software engineers get PR through Express Entry after a Canadian master's?
They can apply, but mostly through the general rounds. IRCC's STEM category does not list software engineers, software developers or data scientists, so Canadian work experience on the PGWP and CLB language scores carry the weight.
