Accademia di Belle Arti di Bologna

The Accademia di Belle Arti di Bologna (ABABo) is one of Italy's oldest and most prestigious public fine arts academies. Its origins trace to the Accademia Clementina, founded in 1716 under Pope Clement XI, and it was later reorganized during the Napoleonic era into the modern state academy structure. Today it operates within Italy's AFAM system (Alta Formazione Artistica, Musicale e Coreutica), offering undergraduate and graduate programs in visual and applied arts. The academy is known for strong traditions in painting, sculpture, graphic arts, set design, and communication arts, combining classical studio training with contemporary practice and digital media. It maintains close ties to Bologna's rich artistic and cultural scene, including museums, galleries, and the wider university environment of the city. ABABo serves a focused cohort of art students rather than functioning as a large general university. Admission is typically based on competitive entrance exams and portfolio review. Its urban campus includes historic buildings, specialized workshops, studios, and exhibition spaces in central Bologna.
