Free checklist for Indian students
You can study in Australia without IELTS, but not without English evidence of some kind. For the subclass 500 student visa the Department of Home Affairs accepts PTE Academic (47), TOEFL iBT (67), Cambridge C1 Advanced (161) and OET (1210) for a standalone course, with lower PTE, TOEFL and OET scores if you package 10 or 20 weeks of ELICOS (C1 Advanced is not accepted with ELICOS packaging), and it exempts postgraduate research students and anyone with five years of English-medium study in Australia, the UK, USA, Canada, NZ, South Africa or Ireland. A medium-of-instruction (MOI) letter from your Indian college can get you admitted at many universities, but India is not on the visa exemption list, so whether you must show a test score for the visa depends on your provider's evidence level, not on the MOI letter.
Can you study in Australia without IELTS?
Yes, in two different senses that Indian students often confuse. First, IELTS is only one of several tests both universities and the Department of Home Affairs accept, so "without IELTS" can simply mean sitting PTE Academic, TOEFL iBT, Cambridge C1 Advanced or OET instead. Second, "without any test" is possible for admission at universities that accept a medium-of-instruction (MOI) letter or strong Class 12 English marks, and for the visa only if you fall into one of the Department's exemption categories.
The trap is assuming the university's waiver carries over to the visa. Admission English is set by each provider under the ESOS framework and can be waived at its discretion. Visa English is set by Home Affairs under the Migration (English Language Tests and Evidence Exemptions for Subclass 500 (Student) Visas) Instrument 2025. An MOI letter from an Indian college is not on that instrument's exemption list. Whether you must attach a test score to the visa depends on the "evidence level" assigned to the combination of your passport and your provider, which you check in the Document Checklist Tool, and the Department can ask for evidence at any point even when the tool says it is not required at lodgement.
Which English tests does Australia accept instead of IELTS for the student visa?
Minimum overall scores for the subclass 500 for tests taken on or after 7 August 2025, as published by Home Affairs. The two right-hand columns apply when your Confirmation of Enrolment packages an English course (ELICOS) or a Foundation program before the main course.
| Test | Standalone course | With at least 10 weeks ELICOS, Foundation or eligible Pathway | With at least 20 weeks ELICOS |
|---|---|---|---|
| IELTS (Academic or General Training) | 6.0 | 5.5 | 5.0 |
| PTE Academic | 47 | 39 | 31 |
| TOEFL iBT (register with "Taking TOEFL for Australia") | 67 | 51 | 37 |
| Cambridge C1 Advanced | 161 | Excluded | Excluded |
| Occupational English Test (OET) | 1210 | 1090 | 1020 |
Source: Department of Home Affairs, subclass 500 Step by step, "English language test scores (test taken on or after 7 August 2025)", checked 26 Sep 2026. Cambridge C1 Advanced does not accept any test scores below IELTS 6, so it is excluded when ELICOS is packaged. Tests must be taken at a test centre within the two years before lodgement; IELTS Online, TOEFL iBT Home Edition, LANGUAGECERT Academic Online, OET@Home, CELPIP Online and at-home MET Digital are not accepted.

How do MOI waivers work for admission to Australian universities?
Many Australian universities will waive their own English requirement for applicants whose previous degree was taught and assessed in English, evidenced by a medium-of-instruction letter from the college or a transcript that states the language of instruction. Policies differ: some accept an MOI from any recognised Indian university completed within the last two to five years; some restrict it to specific institutions or to applicants with a minimum percentage in Class 12 English (commonly 65–75% in CBSE or ISC English); some do not accept MOI at all for nursing, teaching, law or medicine, where professional registration bodies set the English bar.
Ask three questions before relying on an MOI: does the university accept it for your specific course; does the offer letter state the English condition as met; and what does the Document Checklist Tool say about English evidence for the visa with that provider. If the tool says evidence is required at lodgement, the MOI letter will not substitute for a test score.
For postgraduate research applicants the position is cleaner: enrolment in a registered postgraduate research course is a Home Affairs exemption, so once the university admits you (which may itself be on an MOI basis or on your publications and supervisor endorsement), the visa does not need a test score.
How to study in Australia without IELTS: the safe sequence
This order avoids the most expensive failure: an offer in hand and a visa refused or delayed for want of English evidence.
Decide whether you are avoiding IELTS or avoiding all tests
If you simply prefer another format, PTE Academic (computer-based, quick results) or TOEFL iBT satisfies both admission and visa. If you want no test at all, check the exemption table above honestly; most Indian applicants for coursework degrees do not qualify.
Shortlist universities and courses that accept MOI for admission
Check each course page for the English requirement and its waiver policy; email admissions with your degree, university and year of completion. Exclude regulated courses (nursing, teaching, medicine) where registration bodies require a test.
Run the Home Affairs Document Checklist Tool for each provider
Enter your passport country and the provider to see whether English evidence must be attached at lodgement. Providers differ, so the same MOI-based offer may need a test at one university and not at another.
If a test is required, book PTE or TOEFL at a centre
For a standalone course the visa minimum is PTE Academic 47 or TOEFL iBT 67 (tests taken on or after 7 August 2025); universities usually want the IELTS 6.5 equivalent. Select "Taking TOEFL for Australia" when registering for TOEFL (required from 21 January 2026). Tests cost roughly AUD 310–490 (about ₹21,000–33,000) per RMIT's 2026 guide.
Consider an ELICOS package if your score falls short
Packaging at least 10 weeks of ELICOS lowers the visa threshold to PTE 39 / TOEFL 51, and 20 weeks to PTE 31 / TOEFL 37. Extra tuition and living costs apply, and the ELICOS must appear on your CoE sequence.
Keep evidence for the whole visa period
The Department can request English evidence after lodgement or during processing. Keep the test report or exemption evidence accessible until the visa is granted.
Do not plan the 485 visa around an MOI waiver
Universities in Australia without IELTS: how to read the claim
- No Australian university admits international students with no English evidence at all; "without IELTS" on a university page means alternative tests, MOI waivers or internal English pathways are accepted.
- MOI acceptance is course-specific and time-limited; a degree completed more than two to five years ago is usually not accepted as evidence.
- Universities with their own English language centres often admit conditionally and package ELICOS, which also lowers the visa score threshold.
- Foundation and diploma pathway providers set lower English thresholds and lead into the second year of a bachelor degree; the visa threshold with a packaged Foundation program is IELTS 5.5 equivalent.
- Regulated professions (nursing, midwifery, teaching, medicine, pharmacy) require a test for registration regardless of university policy; plan for IELTS 7.0 or OET B in those fields.
PTE vs TOEFL vs IELTS for Australia: which should an Indian student choose?
All three are accepted by every Australian university and by Home Affairs for both the 500 and 485 visas. PTE Academic is the most popular IELTS alternative among Indian students because it is fully computer-scored, offers frequent test dates in most Indian cities and typically returns results within days. TOEFL iBT is equally accepted but you must register through the "Taking TOEFL for Australia" option from 21 January 2026 for the score to be valid for a visa, and the at-home edition is not accepted. OET is for healthcare applicants only.
Whichever you choose, book a centre-based test: every at-home version is rejected by Home Affairs. Aim for the university requirement rather than the visa minimum, because a score at the PTE 47 visa minimum will satisfy the visa but not most coursework admissions, which sit near the IELTS 6.5 equivalent.
Frequently asked questions
Can I get an Australia student visa without IELTS?
Yes, if you provide another accepted test (for a standalone course, PTE Academic 47, TOEFL iBT 67, Cambridge C1 Advanced 161 or OET 1210; with 10 weeks of ELICOS PTE 39, TOEFL 51 or OET 1090, and with 20 weeks PTE 31, TOEFL 37 or OET 1020, while C1 Advanced is excluded) or fall into a Home Affairs exemption category, such as enrolment in a postgraduate research course. Whether evidence is needed at lodgement depends on your provider's evidence level.
Is an MOI certificate accepted for the Australia student visa?
Not as a visa exemption. Home Affairs exempts five years of English-medium study only in Australia, the UK, USA, Canada, New Zealand, South Africa or Ireland, so an Indian MOI letter counts for university admission (where the provider allows it) but not for the visa English rule.
What PTE score is required for Australia without IELTS?
For the student visa, PTE Academic 47 overall for a standalone course, 39 with at least 10 weeks of ELICOS (or a Foundation or eligible Pathway program) packaged, or 31 with at least 20 weeks of ELICOS, for tests taken on or after 7 August 2025. Universities usually require more, around the IELTS 6.5 equivalent, and the 485 post-study visa requires PTE 55.
Is TOEFL Home Edition accepted for an Australian visa?
No. Home Affairs does not accept any English test delivered entirely online or at home, including TOEFL iBT Home Edition, IELTS Online, OET@Home and CELPIP Online. Book a test-centre sitting and, for TOEFL, select "Taking TOEFL for Australia" when you register.
Can I study in Australia with 12th English marks instead of IELTS?
Some universities accept a minimum Class 12 English mark, often 65–75% in CBSE or ISC English, as admission evidence for undergraduate courses. This is a provider decision and does not exempt you from the visa English requirement, so check the Document Checklist Tool for your provider before relying on it.
Do PhD students in Australia need IELTS for the visa?
No. Enrolment in a registered postgraduate research course is a Home Affairs exemption category for the subclass 500, so MPhil and PhD applicants do not need to attach a test score for the visa. The university sets its own admission English rule and may accept MOI or publications.
How much does an English test for Australia cost in India?
RMIT's 2026 cost guide puts IELTS, PTE and TOEFL at roughly AUD 310–490, about ₹21,000–33,000 at A$1 = ₹67.3; the exact rupee fee is set by each provider in India. Sitting one test that satisfies both the university and the visa is cheaper than a waiver that later fails.
