For Indian students the realistic scholarships in Australia are university merit awards, typically 20–50% of tuition and occasionally 100%, assessed on your 12th-board or bachelor percentage, plus Research Training Program (RTP) fee offsets and stipends for research masters and PhD candidates. The two headline government schemes do not apply: Australia Awards Scholarships list participating countries and India is not one of them, and the Destination Australia program has had no new funding rounds since 1 July 2024. A 50% award on a AUD 50,000 course saves AUD 25,000 a year, about ₹17 lakh.
Which Australian scholarships can Indian students actually get?
Start with what is closed. Australia Awards Scholarships, the flagship DFAT program, are for citizens of listed developing countries in Africa, Asia and the Pacific; the Asia list checked on 26 September 2026 names Bangladesh, Bhutan, Nepal, Pakistan, Sri Lanka and the Maldives among others, but not India. The Destination Australia program, which funded regional-campus scholarships through universities, has had no further funding rounds since 1 July 2024; only existing recipients are still supported.
What remains is substantial but decentralised. Every major university runs international merit scholarships that cut tuition by a fixed percentage, usually 20–50%, for applicants above a stated percentage in Year 12 or a bachelor degree; a few, such as Deakin's Vice-Chancellor's International Scholarship, cover 100% of tuition for exceptional profiles. Research students at every university can be nominated for the Commonwealth-funded Research Training Program, which pays fee offsets and living stipends.
Because most awards are assessed on marks you already have, the strategy for Indian applicants is simple: apply early, apply to universities whose published thresholds you clear, and treat the scholarship as a fee discount to be compared across offers rather than a lottery.
Scholarships in Australia for Indian students: names, values and eligibility
Values are as published on the sources listed on 26 September 2026. INR conversions assume a AUD 50,000 annual tuition fee where the award is a percentage. Deadlines are set per intake by each university; the Deakin scheme, for example, asks for applications at least one month before the program starts.
| Scholarship | Value | Approx. INR saving / year | Who is eligible | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Deakin Vice-Chancellor's International Scholarship | 100% or 50% of tuition | ₹34 lakh or ₹17 lakh | new international coursework students with 85% in Year 12 (CBSE, ICSE or State Board) or 80% in a bachelor degree | 300-word statement, two references, possible interview; not for the Doctor of Medicine |
| University of Newcastle Vice-Chancellor's International Academic Merit Scholarship | 30% of tuition | ₹10 lakh | academically gifted international students commencing 2027 | assessed on academic record |
| University of Newcastle International Excellence Scholarship | 20% of tuition | ₹6.7 lakh | high-performing international students commencing 2027 | assessed on academic record |
| Research Training Program (RTP) | tuition fee offset and stipend | up to full fees (AUD 46,900–58,400 at Sydney) plus stipend | research masters and PhD candidates, domestic and international | apply to the university; competitive on research proposal and supervisor support |
| Australia Awards Scholarships | full tuition, travel, living allowance | not available | citizens of listed African, Asian and Pacific countries | India is not a participating country |
| Destination Australia | regional-campus scholarship (closed) | not available | closed to new applicants | no funding rounds from 1 July 2024 |

How do university merit scholarships in Australia work?
Most Australian universities publish a scholarship matrix for international students: a percentage discount on tuition tied to a minimum academic score and a list of eligible courses, renewed each year if you keep a stated grade average. Many are applied automatically when you receive an offer, so the "application" is the course application itself; others, like Deakin's, need a separate form with a personal statement and references. Universities in regional and smaller-city locations tend to publish larger percentages because they are competing with Sydney and Melbourne for the same students.
For Indian applicants the assessment is usually on the Year 12 percentage for undergraduate awards (Deakin, for instance, specifies 85% overall in CBSE, ICSE or a State Board) and on the bachelor percentage or CGPA for postgraduate awards (80% in Deakin's case). Backlogs and gap years are not automatic disqualifiers but lower your competitiveness because the awards are ranked, and meeting the minimum does not mean selection.
Read the conditions: awards cover the standard course duration only, exclude repeated or extra units, and often exclude medicine, dentistry and some professional programs. A 50% scholarship at a AUD 50,000-a-year university is worth about ₹17 lakh a year, so it is worth comparing a discounted Group of Eight offer with a full-price regional one on total cost rather than headline rank.
How to apply for scholarships in Australia from India
Scholarship deadlines almost always fall before the course application deadline. Work backwards from the February or July intake you want.
Shortlist universities whose published thresholds you meet
Compare each university's international scholarship page against your actual Year 12 or bachelor percentage. Note whether the award is automatic on offer or needs a separate application, and whether your course is excluded.
Apply for admission early in the cycle
Automatic awards are allocated as offers are issued, so applying in the first months of the cycle (October to December for February, March to April for July) improves your chances. Upload complete transcripts, since assessors will not chase missing semesters.
Prepare the statement and references where required
Deakin asks for a 300-word personal statement in your own words plus two references on community involvement or leadership; similar schemes elsewhere want evidence of leadership and a clear reason for choosing the university. Write specifically, not generically.
For research degrees, secure a supervisor first
RTP and university research scholarships are ranked on the research proposal, publications and supervisor endorsement. Contact potential supervisors six to nine months before the scholarship round and align your proposal with their funded projects.
Lock the scholarship into your offer letter
Accept only when the scholarship value and conditions appear on the offer or a separate award letter. The reduced fee then feeds into your Confirmation of Enrolment and lowers the tuition you must show for the student visa.
Keep the renewal conditions
Most awards require a minimum weighted average each year and full-time enrolment. Check the threshold at the start of each semester so you do not lose ₹10–17 lakh over a single failed unit.
Government and external funding that Indian students can still use
- Research Training Program (RTP): Commonwealth funding allocated by each university to research masters and PhD candidates as fee offsets and stipends; international students are eligible and apply directly to the university.
- State and city scholarships: some state governments and study-city bodies run smaller awards or fee-waiver rounds for international students at their institutions; check the relevant Study NSW, Study Melbourne, StudyAdelaide, Study Perth or Study Queensland site for current rounds.
- Indian government and trust funding: schemes such as the J.N. Tata Endowment loan scholarship, K.C. Mahindra scholarships and the Inlaks Shivdasani Foundation fund overseas postgraduate study; check their current eligibility and whether Australian universities are covered.
- Employer and industry scholarships: universities list donor-funded awards, some restricted to specific fields (engineering, nursing, sports business) and worth from under AUD 1,000 to AUD 75,000; the University of Newcastle's list is an example of how many exist below the headline schemes.

Common mistakes Indian applicants make with Australian scholarships
Applying to Australia Awards: it is not open to Indian citizens, and time spent on it is wasted. Chasing a percentage headline without checking the base fee: 30% off a AUD 60,000 course still costs more than full fees at a AUD 38,000 one. Missing the earlier scholarship deadline while waiting on a conditional offer: submit the scholarship form with predicted results if the university allows it. Assuming awards renew automatically: most are conditional on a minimum grade average each year.
Finally, be wary of anyone charging a fee to "arrange" a university scholarship. Awards are assessed by the university on published criteria; representatives and counsellors, including NexStudy, can help you match thresholds and prepare statements, but nobody can secure an award on your behalf.
Frequently asked questions
Can Indian students get a fully funded scholarship in Australia?
Rarely, but yes: Deakin's Vice-Chancellor's International Scholarship covers 100% of tuition for applicants with at least 85% in Year 12 or 80% in a bachelor degree, and RTP scholarships cover full research-degree fees plus a stipend. Most Indian students receive partial awards of 20–50% of tuition.
Is Australia Awards Scholarship available for Indian students?
No. DFAT's participating-countries list, checked on 26 September 2026, covers selected countries in Africa, Asia and the Pacific, including Bangladesh, Nepal, Pakistan, Sri Lanka and the Maldives, but does not include India. Indian applicants should focus on university merit scholarships and RTP funding instead.
What percentage is required for a scholarship in Australia?
Thresholds are set per university and per award. Deakin requires 85% overall in Year 12 (CBSE, ICSE or State Board) for undergraduate applicants and 80% in a bachelor degree for postgraduate applicants; most partial awards fall between 20% and 50% of tuition, for example Newcastle's 20% and 30% awards. Meeting the minimum does not ensure selection.
How much does a 50% scholarship save on studying in Australia?
On a typical AUD 50,000 annual fee, a 50% award saves AUD 25,000 a year, about ₹17 lakh, or roughly ₹34 lakh over a two-year masters. It also reduces the tuition you must show for the student visa, because the financial-capacity test counts fees less amounts already covered.
Is the Destination Australia scholarship still available?
No new rounds. The Department of Education states that, as part of the 2024–25 Budget, there are no further funding rounds of the Destination Australia program from 1 July 2024. Existing recipients continue to be supported for up to four years if they remain eligible.
Are there scholarships for a PhD in Australia for Indian students?
Yes. The Research Training Program funds research masters and PhD candidates, including international students, with tuition fee offsets and living stipends, allocated competitively by each university. You apply to the university with a research proposal and supervisor support, typically six to nine months before the intake.
When should I apply for scholarships in Australia?
Apply at the start of the admission cycle: October to December for the February intake and March to April for July. Automatic merit awards are allocated as offers are issued, and separate-application schemes such as Deakin's close at least one month before the program starts.
