Christian-Albrechts-Universität zu Kiel (CAU), commonly known as Kiel University, is a public research university located in Kiel, the capital of Schleswig-Holstein, Germany. Founded in 1665, it is one of the oldest universities in Germany and the largest institution of higher education in the state of Schleswig-Holstein. The university is named after its founder, Christian Albert, Duke of Holstein-Gottorp, and offers a broad range of academic programs across the humanities, social sciences, natural sciences, medicine, and engineering. CAU is particularly recognized for its strong research profile in marine sciences, life sciences, nanoscience, and economics.
