Christian-Albrechts-Universität zu Kiel (CAU), commonly known as Kiel University, is a public research university located in Kiel, the capital of Schleswig-Holstein, Germany. Founded in 1665, it is one of the oldest universities in Germany and the largest institution of higher education in the state of Schleswig-Holstein. The university is named after its founder, Christian Albert, Duke of Holstein-Gottorp, and offers a broad range of academic programs across the humanities, social sciences, natural sciences, medicine, and engineering. CAU is particularly recognized for its strong research profile in marine sciences, life sciences, nanoscience, and economics. As a comprehensive research university, CAU maintains close collaborations with leading research institutions in Kiel, including the GEOMAR Helmholtz Centre for Ocean Research Kiel, the Kiel Institute for the World Economy (IfW), and the Max Planck Institute for Evolutionary Biology. The university is a member of the German U15 group of major research-intensive universities and participates in numerous international research networks.
