The University of Göttingen (Georg-August-Universität Göttingen) is a public research university located in Göttingen, Lower Saxony, Germany. Founded in 1734 by George II, King of Great Britain and Elector of Hanover, it opened to students in 1737 and is one of the oldest and most prestigious universities in Germany. It has a strong international reputation especially in the natural sciences, mathematics, humanities, law, and medicine, and has historical ties to many pioneering scholars such as Carl Friedrich Gauss, Bernhard Riemann, David Hilbert, Max Planck, and Werner Heisenberg. Today the university is a major center for research and teaching, with close links to several Max Planck Institutes, the German Primate Center, and other research institutions in the Göttingen area. It is a member of the German U15, the Coimbra Group, and the U4 Network, and offers a broad range of undergraduate, graduate, and doctoral programs across thirteen faculties.
