Martin Luther University of Halle-Wittenberg (MLU) is a public research university located in Halle (Saale), Saxony-Anhalt, Germany. It was formed in 1817 through the merger of the University of Wittenberg (founded in 1502) and the University of Halle (founded in 1694). The university is named after Martin Luther, who taught in Wittenberg, and is known for strong programs in the natural sciences, humanities, social sciences, medicine, and agriculture. It is a member of the Saxony-Anhalt state university system and maintains close ties with the Max Planck Institute and the Leibniz Association in the region. MLU has a long tradition of research and teaching, with notable historical figures such as Christian Wolff, August Hermann Francke, and the Brothers Grimm associated with its predecessor institutions.
