University of California (UCSC)

The University of California, Santa Cruz (UC Santa Cruz or UCSC) is a public land-grant research university in Santa Cruz, California. It is one of the ten campuses of the University of California system. Known for its progressive, interdisciplinary academic approach, UCSC combines the resources of a major research university with a distinctive residential college system modeled in part on Oxford and Cambridge. The campus sits on a sprawling, forested site overlooking Monterey Bay and the Pacific Ocean, offering a strong emphasis on undergraduate research, environmental and marine sciences, and the arts. UCSC offers more than 60 undergraduate majors and more than 40 graduate programs across its divisions, including the arts, engineering, humanities, physical and biological sciences, and social sciences. The university is classified among "R1: Doctoral Universities – Very high research activity" and is home to renowned research centers such as the Lick Observatory, the Seymour Marine Discovery Center, and the Genomics Institute. Its Banana Slugs mascot and redwood-ringed campus make it one of the most visually distinctive institutions in the UC system.
