University of California, San Diego

The University of California, San Diego (UC San Diego or UCSD) is a public land-grant research university in La Jolla, California. Founded in 1960, it is one of the ten campuses of the University of California system and is known for its strong emphasis on science, engineering, medicine, and marine sciences. The university is organized into six undergraduate residential colleges and several graduate and professional schools, and it operates closely with the Scripps Institution of Oceanography and UC San Diego Health. UC San Diego is classified as an R1 research university with very high research activity. It consistently ranks among the top public universities in the United States and is a major recipient of federal research funding. The campus is located on a coastal site in La Jolla, just north of downtown San Diego, and features modern architecture, extensive research facilities, and strong ties to the region's biotechnology and technology industries.
