The University of King's College is a small public liberal arts university located in Halifax, Nova Scotia, Canada. Founded in 1789 in Windsor, Nova Scotia, it is the oldest university in English-speaking Canada and the oldest English-speaking university in the Commonwealth outside the United Kingdom. After a devastating fire in 1920, the university relocated to Halifax in 1923 and entered into an academic affiliation with Dalhousie University, allowing King's students to access Dalhousie's broader resources while maintaining its own distinctive academic culture. King's is best known for its Foundation Year Programme (FYP), a required first-year great-books curriculum that introduces students to Western intellectual tradition through intensive reading and discussion of classic texts. The university also offers well-regarded programs in journalism, contemporary studies, history of science and technology, and early modern studies. With a small student body and close-knit residential community, King's emphasizes tutorial-style learning, writing, and critical thinking within an intimate campus environment.
