MS engineering tuition is about $30,318 to $40,444 a year (about ₹29–39 lakh), plus housing. Illinois, Purdue and UC San Diego mechanical departments do not require the GRE. Fall 2027 deadlines run from 1 December 2026 to 30 March 2027, and engineering codes on the DHS list earn 12 months of OPT plus a 24-month STEM extension.
What does an MS in engineering in the USA involve, and why do Indian students pick it?
India sent 363,019 students to the United States in 2024/25, the largest group of any country, up 10% on the year, and about 18% of all international students studied engineering while 26% studied mathematics and computer science (Open Doors 2025, read 26 September 2026). Mechanical, electrical and electronics, civil, industrial, aerospace, materials and robotics engineering all sit inside the same MS system: a credit-based master's of roughly 30 credits, taken over three or four semesters.
There are two products under one name. The thesis MS has you work with a faculty member, who can fund you through a research assistantship. The course-based or professional master's, including most MEng degrees, is self-funded: UC San Diego says MS students should not expect assistantships, and Purdue funds research students but not non-thesis professional ones. Decide which you are applying for before you compare costs.
What matters is the classification code on your I-20. The DHS STEM list includes every code in the 14.xxxx engineering series, plus 15.1501 Engineering/Industrial Management and 14.3701 Operations Research, so nearly every engineering MS earns the 24-month STEM OPT extension.
How much does an MS in mechanical or electrical engineering cost in the USA in 2026-27?
Published 2026-27 international rates read on each university's own page on 26 September 2026. Public universities bill a flat rate; private ones bill per credit, so multiply by the credits on the programme page. No figure includes housing, food or books.

How do Indian BTech degrees, backlogs, the GRE and education loans work for engineering applications?
- Four-year BE or BTech: the standard route. Departments convert your marks to the US scale themselves: Illinois mechanical engineering asks for 3.25/4.0 or equivalent over the last 60 semester hours, so ask the department how it converts percentages before you assume a cut-off.
- Different bachelor's degree: Purdue accepts engineering or science degrees and expects calculus 1 to 3, differential equations, linear algebra and physics 1 and 2; UC San Diego says an engineering degree is not required. Georgia Tech asks for a "4-year U.S. Bachelor's degree or equivalent", so a three-year BSc applicant should ask whether the degree counts before paying a fee.
- Backlogs and gaps: none of these departments publishes a backlog rule. Explain them in the statement of purpose and show strong later semesters, because Illinois reads the last 60 semester hours.
- GRE: Illinois does not require it and says a score does not make an applicant more competitive; UC San Diego has no minimum; Purdue treats it as optional and suggests applicants from less well-known schools consider it. Treat a score as a tiebreaker.
- English: Georgia Tech accepts a medium-of-instruction certificate for an English-taught BTech, and UC San Diego exempts degrees from institutions listed as English-only in the WHED database. Illinois and Purdue still ask Indian citizens for a test unless a waiver applies.
- Funding the first year: SBI's Global Ed-Vantage scheme, one example read on its own page on 26 September 2026, lends above ₹7.5 lakh up to ₹3 crore for full-time courses abroad, is collateral-free up to ₹50 lakh for select premier institutions and otherwise asks for tangible collateral. Non-bank and US-based lenders such as Prodigy and MPOWER are alternatives that do not rely on property collateral; they are examples, not recommendations, so compare rates and fees on their own pages and check the current cap before you assume a figure.
- Research contact: Illinois and Purdue say research assistantships are offered by faculty, so write to professors whose labs match your final-year project. Do not ask departments for individual profile evaluations; several say they cannot answer them.
How to apply for an MS in engineering in the USA from India: timeline for Fall 2027
The earliest published engineering deadline in this guide is 1 December 2026. Work backwards from the table above. A NexStudy counsellor can sanity-check your shortlist, but each department makes its own decision.
September–October 2026: thesis or course-based, and which codes
Decide between research funding and a self-funded professional master's. Read each programme page for credit count and thesis option, ask the international office for the CIP code on the I-20, and shortlist 6–8 programmes across the cost range.
October–November 2026: tests and faculty contact
Book IELTS (UC San Diego wants 7, Illinois full status 7.5) or TOEFL, and the GRE only if a department asks. Email two or three professors per department about openings and request three letters of recommendation.
1 December 2026: first deadlines
Illinois mechanical engineering Fall and Purdue research-programme deadlines both fall on 1 December. Illinois says it cannot review late materials or extend deadlines.
January–March 2027: later deadlines
UC San Diego MAE closes 13 January 2027 (Fall only), Georgia Tech mechanical engineering 2 March 2027 and Purdue course-based programmes 30 March 2027.
March–May 2027: offers and deposit
Illinois notifies up to 15 April, UC San Diego between March and June, and Purdue asks admitted students to reply by 15 May. Compare net cost, funding and CIP code before you accept.
May–June 2027: I-20, SEVIS and visa
Submit proof of funds, such as an education-loan sanction letter. Pay the $350 SEVIS fee (about ₹33,500) and the $185 visa fee (about ₹17,700), about ₹51,000 together, complete the DS-160 and book the interview. Check current Liberalised Remittance Scheme and tax collection rules with your bank before the first payment.
August 2027: arrive and register
Report to the designated school official at orientation, and ask about curricular practical training before accepting any internship.
Does ABET accreditation matter for an MS in engineering, and can you become a licensed engineer?
ABET, the accreditor behind the Washington Accord on the US side, states that the accord covers engineering degree programmes accredited by signatory bodies and helps determine whether a programme is recognised for licensure, employment or admission to graduate school in another jurisdiction. India's National Board of Accreditation became a permanent signatory on 13 June 2014, and describes the accord as covering undergraduate engineering degrees. Its page limits recognition to NBA-accredited programmes at Tier-I institutions, and only for graduates who completed the programme after that date and while the accreditation was valid, so a BTech from an unaccredited programme is not covered. Neither page tells you how a US master's is treated.
This matters mostly for licensure. The Fundamentals of Engineering exam, the first step to a Professional Engineer licence, costs $225 (about ₹21,600). NCEES says candidates who studied outside the US are usually referred by a state board to its Credentials Evaluations service, which costs $400 (about ₹38,300), takes about 15 business days and counts master's coursework toward its standard. Licensure is decided state by state, and BLS notes that civil engineers typically need a licence if they serve the public directly.
What does official US labour data say about engineering jobs?
The Bureau of Labor Statistics Occupational Outlook Handbook (read 26 September 2026) publishes national figures by occupation. They describe all workers, not new international graduates, and BLS lists a bachelor's degree as the typical entry-level qualification for all three.

How long can you work after an MS in engineering: OPT, STEM OPT and the H-1B?
After graduation, post-completion OPT gives up to 12 months of work directly related to your major. If your degree is on the DHS STEM Designated Degree Program List, which includes every 14.xxxx engineering code, you can apply for a 24-month extension, but only if your employer is enrolled in and using E-Verify and signs a training plan. You may be unemployed for up to 90 days on the first year of OPT and 60 more on the extension, 150 in total.
The H-1B is the route to longer work. Congress sets the regular cap at 65,000 a year, with an additional 20,000 petitions for people with a master's or higher from a US institution. Employers register you for $215 (about ₹20,600), and from fiscal year 2027 USCIS applies weighted selection that enters wage level IV registrations four times, level III three times, level II twice and level I once. A Presidential Proclamation also created a $100,000 payment (about ₹95.8 lakh) for certain new H-1B petitions. The USCIS fee schedule page, read 26 September 2026, states that on 8 June 2026 a federal district court vacated the agency guidance implementing that payment, that the First Circuit denied the government's stay motion on 24 July 2026, and that DHS will comply with the order for now but still plans to collect the payment if the order is later lifted. Reread that page before your employer registers you, because the position can change.

Is the GRE required for an MS in mechanical or electrical engineering at Illinois, Purdue and UC San Diego?
Often no. Illinois mechanical engineering does not require it and says a score gives no advantage, UC San Diego mechanical and aerospace is GRE optional with no minimum, and Purdue mechanical lists it as optional. Check electrical and civil departments separately because each sets its own policy, and some professors still prefer scores.
Can I do an MS in engineering in the USA with a BSc instead of a BTech?
Sometimes. Purdue mechanical engineering accepts a bachelor's in engineering or science if you have completed calculus 1 to 3, differential equations, linear algebra and physics 1 and 2. UC San Diego says an engineering degree is not required but a strong maths and physics base is. Expect to fill gaps with prerequisite courses.
Do I need an ABET-accredited degree for an MS in engineering in the USA?
No for admission: departments look at your marks and courses. ABET matters later, for licensure. NCEES says you do not need a credentials evaluation if your degree was EAC/ABET-accredited; otherwise a state board usually refers you to the $400 NCEES evaluation (about ₹38,300). Can I become a licensed professional engineer in the USA with an Indian BTech and a US master's?
