Whitireia and WelTec (Wellington Institute of Technology) are public tertiary education institutions in New Zealand's lower North Island. They are not universities but rather institutes of technology and polytechnics offering vocational, technical, and professional education. In 2020, both institutions became subsidiaries of Te Pūkenga – New Zealand Institute of Skills and Technology, as part of the government's nationwide polytechnic merger. Whitireia was established in 1986 and operates campuses in Porirua, Wellington, Kāpiti, and Auckland. WelTec traces its origins to 1904 and operates from campuses in Petone, Wellington CBD, and other locations. Together they provide applied, industry-focused programmes in areas such as health, trades, business, hospitality, IT, and creative arts.
