Vancouver Island University (VIU) is a public university headquartered in Nanaimo, British Columbia, on Canada's west coast. Originally established in 1969 as Malaspina College, it gained full university status in 2008 and now serves students across multiple campuses, including Nanaimo, Cowichan (Duncan), Powell River, and Parksville-Qualicum. VIU is known for its accessible, student-centered education, strong ties to local communities, and emphasis on applied learning, co-op programs, and Indigenous education through initiatives such as the 'su'luqw'a' Community Cousins Aboriginal Student Support program and 'Namgis First Nation partnerships. The university offers a wide range of credentials, including certificates, diplomas, bachelor's degrees, and graduate programs in areas such as business, education, health, trades, arts, sciences, tourism, and natural resource management. VIU attracts a diverse student body from across Canada and more than 90 countries, with popular programs for international students including English language preparation, business, hospitality, and post-degree diplomas. Its coastal location provides distinctive opportunities in marine science, forestry, fisheries, and outdoor recreation. VIU is recognized as a teaching-focused institution rather than a large research-intensive university. It combines academic programs with strong support services, including academic advising, career services, counseling, accessibility services, and on-campus housing. The university maintains close relationships with regional employers and Indigenous communities, positioning itself as a key higher-education provider for Vancouver Island and beyond.
