The University of Massachusetts Dartmouth (UMass Dartmouth) is a public national research university located in North Dartmouth, Massachusetts. Tracing its origins to 1895, when the state chartered textile schools in New Bedford and Fall River, the institution evolved through Southeastern Massachusetts Technological Institute and Southeastern Massachusetts University before joining the University of Massachusetts system in 1991 as UMass Dartmouth. Today it is classified by the Carnegie Classification as a Doctoral University with High Research Activity (R2) and is recognized for strong social mobility outcomes and engaged learning across undergraduate, graduate, and professional programs. UMass Dartmouth serves a diverse student body of nearly 8,000 students and offers more than 50 undergraduate fields of study along with master's and doctoral programs. Students work alongside faculty on research spanning areas such as offshore wind, marine science, engineering, nursing, business, and the arts. The university emphasizes hands-on learning, career readiness, and community engagement, with a high share of graduates employed or continuing education within six months of graduation. The 710-acre suburban campus between New Bedford and Fall River features distinctive modernist architecture designed by Paul Rudolph and hosts students from more than 50 countries. UMass Dartmouth combines the resources of a UMass system research university with a close-knit campus environment, offering residence halls, athletics, student organizations, and access to the cultural and economic opportunities of southeastern Massachusetts and greater New England.
