La Rochelle Université (Université de La Rochelle) is a public French university founded on 20 January 1993 in La Rochelle, Charente-Maritime, on the Atlantic coast between Bordeaux and Nantes. A relatively young, human-scale institution within the Academy of Poitiers, it enrolls roughly 7,500–8,000 students and offers more than 80 state-recognized degrees across arts, literature and languages; human and social sciences; sciences, technology and health; and law, economics and management. Its academic identity is closely tied to coastal environments, sustainable development, and Asian languages and cultures. The university maintains a strong international profile, with about 12% of students of foreign nationality representing around 100 nationalities and partnerships with 181 institutions worldwide through Erasmus+ and bilateral agreements. Research is organized around Smart Urban Coastal Sustainability (SmUCS), supported by roughly a dozen laboratories and federations working on coastal ecology, environmental engineering, marine conservation, mathematics, management, and intercultural studies. The campus is embedded in the heart of La Rochelle near the harbor and seaside, combining modern teaching buildings with student-life infrastructure. Facilities include a university library with more than 900 study seats, two sports halls, extensive research laboratories, the Maison de l'Étudiant cultural center, CROUS-managed student housing, and university dining services.
