Founded in 1940 as one of the nation's first accredited schools of public health, it was renamed the Gillings School of Global Public Health in 2008 following a major gift from Dennis and Joan Gillings. The school offers undergraduate, master's, doctoral, and certificate programs across departments including biostatistics, epidemiology, environmental sciences and engineering, health behavior, health policy and management, maternal and child health, nutrition, and public health leadership. Gillings is widely recognized for research and training in cancer prevention, infectious disease, water and sanitation, health disparities, implementation science, and global health. Its faculty, students, and alumni work across academia, government, nonprofit organizations, and industry to improve population health in North Carolina and worldwide. The school emphasizes interdisciplinary collaboration and applied research that translates evidence into policy and practice. The school is located on UNC Chapel Hill's main campus and is closely connected to the university's broader health sciences ecosystem, including UNC Health and affiliated research centers. This setting supports extensive fieldwork, clinical partnerships, and collaborative research across public health and the health sciences.
