The Peabody Institute of the Johns Hopkins University is a private conservatory and music school located in Baltimore, Maryland. Founded in 1857 through a gift from philanthropist George Peabody, it is one of the oldest and most prestigious music conservatories in the United States. In 1977 it became an affiliated division of Johns Hopkins University, offering undergraduate and graduate degrees in performance, composition, music education, computer music, and recording arts and sciences, while also operating a community preparatory school and extensive public concert programming. The institute occupies a historic urban campus in Baltimore's Mount Vernon cultural district, centered at 1 East Mount Vernon Place. Its facilities include the world-renowned George Peabody Library, multiple concert halls and recital halls, teaching studios, practice rooms, recording studios, and student housing. Peabody presents hundreds of public performances each year and is accredited by the National Association of Schools of Music.
