Alabama Agricultural and Mechanical University, commonly known as Alabama A&M University or AAMU, is a public, historically Black land-grant research university located in Normal, Alabama, just north of Huntsville. Founded in 1875 by former slaves, it is the oldest public historically Black college or university (HBCU) in Alabama and one of the nation's oldest HBCUs. The university offers a comprehensive range of undergraduate, graduate, and doctoral programs across its schools of Agricultural and Environmental Sciences, Arts and Sciences, Business, Education, Engineering and Technology, and Nursing. AAMU is classified as an R2 doctoral university with high research activity and is a member of the Thurgood Marshall College Fund. The campus spans more than 2,100 acres, making it one of the largest campuses of any HBCU in the United States. The university is known for its strong programs in engineering, agriculture, and the sciences, and it serves a diverse student body while maintaining its historic mission of providing educational access and opportunity.
