More top courses in Australia
An MBA in Australia takes 1 to 2 years, starts in February or July (some schools add a third intake) and in 2026 costs roughly AUD 50,000–62,000 a year in tuition at the universities Indian students most often choose: RMIT lists its MBA at AUD 50,880 (about ₹34 lakh) and the University of Sydney lists Business postgraduate coursework at AUD 54,100–61,700 for 2026 entry. Add living costs of at least AUD 29,710 a year (the visa benchmark, about ₹20 lakh). Entry needs a recognised bachelor degree; universities typically ask for two to three years of work experience and IELTS 6.5 or equivalent, and GMAT is asked for by only a few schools (general guidance: confirm on each program page). Indian MBA graduates qualify for a 3-year subclass 485 work visa.
Is an MBA in Australia worth it for Indian students?
Australia offers two quite different products under the MBA label. The first is the experienced-professional MBA at Group of Eight and specialist business schools: typically 12 to 18 months, cohorts with several years of experience, GMAT or interview-based admission, and fees that can differ significantly from standard coursework fees. The second, and the one most Indian applicants actually take, is the coursework MBA or MBA-style masters (Master of Business, Master of Management, MBA (Global) and similar) at large public universities: typically 1.5 to 2 years, some work experience or none, admission on your bachelor percentage and English, and fees in line with other coursework masters. Admission norms on this page are general guidance; verify them on each program page.
The financial case rests on three verified facts. Indian nationals who complete a masters by coursework in Australia get a 3-year Temporary Graduate (subclass 485) visa under the India–Australia ECTA, against 2 years for most other nationalities. Students can work 48 hours a fortnight during study at a National Minimum Wage of AUD 26.44 an hour from 1 July 2026. And every course open to international students is CRICOS-registered with tuition protection. The case against is cost: at AUD 50,000–62,000 a year in tuition plus AUD 29,710 or more in living costs, a two-year MBA is roughly a ₹1.1–1.3 crore decision before scholarships.
How much does an MBA in Australia cost in 2026?
Published 2026 figures from two universities give reference points. Fees are per year of full-time study; a 1.5-year program costs roughly 1.5 times the annual figure. Living costs use the Home Affairs benchmark; RMIT's own Melbourne estimate is AUD 30,000–45,000.
| Cost head | Amount (AUD) | Approx. INR | Source / basis |

| Other business masters (Master of Finance, MHRM) — RMIT | AUD 48,960 | ₹33 lakh | RMIT 2026 |
| Living costs, per year | AUD 29,710 | ₹20 lakh | Home Affairs financial capacity |
| OSHC (single), per year | AUD 590–750 | ₹40,000–50,000 | RMIT 2026 guide |

MBA in Australia eligibility for Indian students
The admission norms below are general guidance, not figures from the official sources on this page; confirm them on each university's program page. Academic: a recognised bachelor degree in any discipline. Three-year Indian degrees (BCom, BBA, BA, BSc) are accepted by many coursework MBA programs; universities publish minimum percentages by institution tier, often in the 55–65% range, with higher cut-offs at Group of Eight schools. Work experience: two to three years of full-time professional experience is the norm for programs badged "MBA", while MBA-style masters and some MBA (Global) programs admit fresh graduates. Experienced-professional MBAs at the top schools usually want considerably more experience and often interview.
English: universities typically ask for IELTS 6.5 overall with no band below 6.0, or PTE Academic and TOEFL iBT equivalents; the student visa itself needs only IELTS 6.0 (or 5.5 with at least 10 weeks of ELICOS) or PTE Academic 47 (tests taken on or after 7 August 2025), so the university requirement is the binding one. GMAT or GRE: not required by most coursework MBAs; some top-ranked programs ask for GMAT or offer a waiver for strong experience. Documents: transcripts, degree certificate, CV, statement of purpose, two references (one professional), passport and English result.
MBA intakes and timelines in Australia
Most MBA programs admit in both semesters; several business schools run trimesters with a third intake. Dates below are typical patterns, not official figures: confirm them on each program page.
| Intake | Classes start | Apply by (typical) | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Semester 1 | Late February / early March | October–December | largest cohort and scholarship pool |
| Semester 2 | July | March–May | applicants leaving Indian jobs mid-year |
| Trimester 3 (selected schools) | October / November | July–August | flexible starts at business schools on a trimester calendar |
Exact dates are set in each university's academic calendar; scholarship deadlines often precede the admission deadline by several weeks.
How to apply for an MBA in Australia from India
Begin 9 to 12 months before the intake. Work experience letters and the English test take the longest to organise.
Choose the MBA type that matches your experience
As a general guide: with little experience, target coursework MBA or Master of Business programs; with some years of experience, standard MBAs; with substantial experience, experienced-professional MBAs. Confirm every option is CRICOS-registered and check its length for 485 planning.
Sit IELTS, PTE Academic or TOEFL iBT at a test centre
Aim for the school's requirement (commonly IELTS 6.5, no band below 6.0). At-home tests are not accepted for the visa, and the 485 later requires a fresh result from the 12 months before you apply.
Assemble professional evidence
Experience letters on company letterhead with dates and role, a CV in reverse chronological order, and one professional and one academic reference. Write a statement of purpose that links your Indian experience to the specific school and to a post-MBA plan.
Apply and negotiate the scholarship at offer stage
Apply online or through a university representative. Many business schools assess merit scholarships automatically from the application; ask about them explicitly before accepting because they reduce the tuition you must evidence for the visa.
Accept, pay the deposit and obtain the CoE and OSHC
The Confirmation of Enrolment is issued after the deposit; buy OSHC for the full visa period. Both are needed before you can lodge the visa.
Lodge the subclass 500 visa
Show AUD 29,710 living costs, first-year tuition less the deposit and AUD 2,000 travel (or a parent's or partner's income of AUD 87,856 or more), answer the Genuine Student questions and pay AUD 2,500. For MBA applicants the Genuine Student answers should explain why a further degree makes sense after work experience.
Where do Indian students study MBA in Australia?
Group by type rather than by rank. Australian business schools cluster in Sydney and Melbourne, with strong options in Brisbane, Adelaide, Perth and Canberra.
- Group of Eight business schools (Melbourne, Sydney, UNSW, Monash, UQ, Adelaide, UWA, ANU): experienced-professional MBAs and coursework business masters; fees at the top of the range, largest scholarship budgets.
- Large technology and metropolitan universities (RMIT, UTS, Deakin, Macquarie, QUT, Curtin): 1.5 to 2-year MBAs with industry projects; RMIT lists its 2026 MBA at AUD 50,880.
- Regional and smaller-city universities (Newcastle, Wollongong, Griffith, Flinders, Tasmania, Charles Darwin and others): lower fees and rents, generous merit scholarships, and Category 2 or Category 3 regional status that adds one or two years to a second 485 visa.
- Specialist business schools within universities: cohort-based MBAs with interviews and, in some cases, GMAT; check whether the program is delivered on a CRICOS-registered full-time basis, since part-time and online MBAs do not support a student visa.
Jobs and salaries after an MBA in Australia
The 3-year 485 visa is the main return on an Australian MBA for Indian graduates: it gives full work rights to move from casual work into management, consulting, banking, project and operations roles, and to complete a skills assessment for a skilled visa if you choose to stay. Universities publish their own graduate outcome data; the Australian Government's Graduate Outcomes Survey reports postgraduate coursework salaries nationally, and it breaks results down by field of study. We do not quote a single MBA salary figure because outcomes depend heavily on pre-MBA experience and city.
Plan the job search from the first semester: Australian employers hire through internships, industry projects and referrals far more than through campus placements in the Indian sense. Business schools with strong industry links in your target city are worth more than a higher rank in a city where you cannot afford to live.

Frequently asked questions
How much does an MBA in Australia cost for Indian students?
Tuition in 2026 runs from about AUD 50,880 a year at RMIT (about ₹34 lakh) to AUD 61,700 at the top of the University of Sydney's Business postgraduate coursework range (about ₹42 lakh). Add living costs of at least AUD 29,710 a year, OSHC of AUD 590–750 and the AUD 2,500 visa charge; a two-year MBA at RMIT's fee totals roughly ₹1.1 crore.
Is work experience required for an MBA in Australia?
Typically two to three years for programs badged "MBA", and considerably more for experienced-professional MBAs at the leading business schools. MBA-style masters such as Master of Business or Master of Management admit fresh graduates, and some universities offer an MBA (Global) pathway without experience.
Is GMAT required for an MBA in Australia?
Not for most programs. Australian coursework MBAs assess your bachelor degree percentage, work experience and English score; only some top-ranked, cohort-based MBAs require GMAT or GRE, and some of those offer waivers for strong professional experience. This is general guidance, so check each program page.
What is the post-study work visa after an MBA in Australia?
Indian nationals who complete a masters by coursework, including an MBA, get a 3-year Temporary Graduate (subclass 485) visa under the India–Australia ECTA, provided they are 35 or under, apply onshore within six months of completing, and show IELTS 6.5 (no band below 5.5) or equivalent. The charge is AUD 5,750.
Which is better for an MBA, Australia or the UK, for Indian students?
Australia gives Indian MBA graduates 3 years of post-study work rights versus shorter periods elsewhere, and a 48-hour fortnightly work allowance at a AUD 26.44 minimum wage during study. It is more expensive over two years than a one-year UK MBA, so the answer depends on whether you plan to work abroad after graduating.
Can I do an MBA in Australia with a 3-year Indian bachelor degree?
Yes, in general. Many Australian coursework MBA programs accept three-year Indian degrees such as BCom, BBA, BA and BSc from recognised universities, often with a minimum percentage that depends on the institution tier. Four-year degrees are not usually required, but check each program page.
What English score do I need for an MBA in Australia?
Business schools typically require IELTS 6.5 overall with no band below 6.0, or PTE Academic and TOEFL iBT equivalents; confirm on the program page. The student visa minimum is lower (IELTS 6.0 or PTE Academic 47 for tests taken on or after 7 August 2025), so the university requirement is the one that matters. Book a test-centre sitting; at-home tests are not accepted for the visa.
