The S. Rajaratnam School of International Studies (RSIS) is a graduate school and policy research institute at Nanyang Technological University (NTU) in Singapore. Established in 2007 and named after Singapore's first foreign minister, it evolved from the Institute of Defence and Strategic Studies (IDSS), which was founded in 1996. RSIS is widely regarded as one of Asia's leading centres for the study of international relations, geopolitics, security, and strategic affairs, combining academic teaching with active policy-oriented research. RSIS offers graduate programmes including Master in International Relations, Master in International Political Economy, Master in Asian Studies, Master in Strategic Studies, and doctoral (PhD) studies. Its faculty and research centres cover areas such as multilateralism and regionalism, terrorism and political violence, non-traditional security, climate change, and Indo-Pacific dynamics. The school maintains strong ties with governments, armed forces, diplomatic corps, international organisations, and think tanks across Asia and beyond. Beyond degree programmes, RSIS operates as a prominent think tank through institutes and centres such as the Institute of Defence and Strategic Studies (IDSS), the Centre for Multilateralism Studies, and the Centre for Non-Traditional Security Studies. It publishes widely cited research, hosts conferences and policy dialogues, and trains professionals in security and foreign policy. Its location within NTU's main campus in Jurong West places it within one of Singapore's largest and most research-intensive universities.
