Kanazawa University (金沢大学) is a leading national university in Kanazawa, Ishikawa Prefecture, on Japan’s Sea of Japan coast. Formed in 1949 under Japan’s postwar national university system, it traces earlier roots to regional higher-education and medical training institutions dating to the nineteenth century. It is known for strong research and education across the natural sciences, engineering, medicine, humanities, and social sciences, and for its role as a major academic hub in the Hokuriku region. The main Kakuma Campus sits on a large hillside site outside central Kanazawa and houses most undergraduate and graduate programs, research institutes, libraries, and student facilities. The Takaramachi/Tsuruma area supports medicine and health sciences, including the university hospital. The university emphasizes interdisciplinary research, global engagement, and collaboration with industry and local communities. As a national research university, Kanazawa University attracts domestic and international students to bachelor’s, master’s, and doctoral programs, with English-taught and exchange options alongside Japanese-medium degrees. It maintains broad campus amenities for study, research, housing, and student life.
